Bearcats split doubleheader on final day of Case Western Reserve tournament

CLEVELAND, Ohio (Sept. 10)- The Saint Vincent women's volleyball team, split a doubleheader at the Case Western Reserve tournament, losing in three sets to Case Western Reserve in the first game, and sweeping Medaille College in the second game.

In their first match of the day, the Bearcats lost in three sets by scores of 25-18, 25-20, and 25-18.
 
Luciana Polk led the way for Saint Vincent with nine kills, one service ace, and five digs. Kaelyn Staples finished with five kills and one block. Senior, Carly Augustine finished with a team high, 13 kills, while also adding four assists.
 
In the first set, Saint Vincent got off to a hot start, with a quick 6-1 lead. Case Western bounced back quickly though with a 5-0 run to tie the set 6-6. The teams traded the next several points as the set remained tied at 11.
 
The Spartans then went on another run, this one, an 8-3 run to take a 19-14 lead. Case Western then won six of the last ten points, to take the set 25-18.
 
The match continued to remain tight early on in the second set. Both teams traded the first few points, as the set was tied 9-9. The Spartans then went on a 5-2 run to take a 14-11 lead, but the Bearcats wouldn't go away. SVC scored the next three points to tie the game at 14.
 
Once again though, Case Western responded with a run of their own, going on a 9-3 run to take a 23-17 lead. The Bearcats scored 3 of the last five points, but it wasn't enough as the Spartans won the set 25-20.
 
Case Western Reserve got off to a quick 6-1 lead in the third set and never lost the lead in the set. The closest Saint Vincent got to the Spartans in the set was 12-9 but Case Western responded, winning the set 25-18 and the match, 3-0.

In the Bearcats second match of the day, this one against Medaille, Saint Vincent controlled from the very beginning. SVC won in three sets, by scores of 25-17, 25-16, and 25-10.
 
Polk led the way once again for the Bearcats, finishing this match with ten kills and three service aces. Augustine finished with nine kills and a team-best 14 assists. Vivian Poach added eight kills in this match for the Bearcats, as well as 13 assists, 12 digs, and one block.
 
In the first set, Medaille scored the first two points, but Saint Vincent responded quickly, going on a 9-2 run to take a 9-4 lead in the set. The Mavericks responded with a 4-0 run of their own to make it 9-8.
 
The game of runs continued, as Saint Vincent scored the next 11 points to take a 20-8 lead. Medaille scored nine of the next 14 points, but it wasn't enough as Saint Vincent won the set 25-17.
 
The second set was back and forth early on, as the set was tied 7-7. From that point, the Bearcats took full control of the set, as Saint Vincent went on a 9-2 run to take 16-9 lead. The Bearcats then outscored the Mavericks 9-7 to win the set 25-16, taking a 2-0 lead in the match.
 
In the third set, the Bearcats opened up to a quick 8-0 lead, and never looked back from there. Saint Vincent held Medaille to just 10 points in the set, as they won the set, 25-10, their largest set victory of the early season.
 
The Bearcats return to action on Thursday, September 17 as they play host to Penn State-Shenango. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. in the Robert S. Carey Center.
