ALTOONA, Pa. (Sept. 29) – The Saint Vincent women's tennis team cruised to an 8-1 victory in a non-conference match at Penn State-Altoona.
The Bearcats won two of three doubles matches, before sweeping through singles play to improve to 4-3 on the season.
The duo of
Lydia Lieb and
Abby Donnelly picked up the Bearcats' first victory of the evening with an 8-2 triumph at the No. 2 doubles position. At the No.1 doubles spot,
Angela Popovich and
Carolina Walters outlasted Altoona's Rachel Stricek and Mikhaela Mecca to win by an 8-7 (7-5) score.
The Lions picked up their first win of the evening at the No. 3 doubles spot by an 8-4 score.
In singles play, Lieb gave the Bearcats a 3-1 lead with a 6-0, 6-2 win in the No. 3 spot, before Walters improved to 5-2 on the season with a 6-4, 6-2 victory in the No. 1 position.
Bella Baumgardner (6-3, 6-4) and
Rebecca Kurylo (7-5, 6-2) both picked up straight-set wins in the No. 5 and No. 6 singles spots, respectively, before Popovich (7-6 (7-1), 6-1) and Donnelly (7-6, 6-7 (3-7), 10-3) rounded out the scoresheet with wins at the No. 2 and No. 4 positions.
The Bearcats are now scheduled to return to Presidents' Athletic Conference play with a 4:30 p.m. match at Westminster on Friday, Sept. 30.
