Women's volleyball takes on W&J

WASHINGTON, Pa. (Oct. 25) – The Saint Vincent women's volleyball team was defeated, 3-0, in a Presidents' Athletic Conference match at Washington & Jefferson College.

The Bearcats (9-12, 3-5 PAC) fell by sets scores of 25-23, 25-20 and 25-11.

Luciana Polk paced the Saint Vincent offense with seven kills, while Lauren Fox and Kaelyn Staples each added four kills. Fox added five blocks and Staples two, while a pair of Bearcats reached double figures in digs, as Stacie Ramos picked up 13 and Polk 10. Ramos also added three service aces, while Nicolena Yanosick recorded seven digs and one service ace.

Madie Eagler handed out 19 assists from the setter spot.

In the opening set, the teams traded points to start, before the Bearcats used a 10-3 run to turn an 8-7 deficit into a 17-11 lead. Staples and Alexis DiFuccia recorded kills over the surge, while Ramos served a pair of aces. The Presidents chipped away at the deficit, using four straight points to pull to within 17-15, but kills from Polk and Staples sandwiched a W&J attack error and pushed the SVC lead back to five at 22-17. From there, however, the Presidents seized the momentum, closing the set on an 8-1 run to earn the 25-23 win.

The hosts got off to a hot start in the second set, opening up leads of 8-3 and 9-4, but after a kill from Fox, another ace from Ramos and a block by SVC's Fox and DiFuccia, SVC trimmed the deficit to 9-7. W&J then began to increase its lead, which eventually stretched to 20-14, before the Bearcats looked to put together a late rally. A W&J service error, followed by kills from Polk and Jessica Hughes, cut the gap to 21-17, before a W&J attack error made it a three-point game, 21-18. The hosts again regrouped, however, scoring four of the final six points to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

SVC opened up a 3-1 lead in the third set, and after the Presidents scored a pair of points, the Bearcats used a W&J attack error and an Eagler ace to regain a 5-3 advantage. W&J stormed back with eight straight points to take an 11-5 lead. Polk's seventh kill of the night would pull the Bearcats to within five, 13-8, but the Presidents ended on a 12-3 run to pull away for the 25-11 set win, and the 3-0 match victory.

For the match, Saint Vincent hit .114, with 24 kills and 14 errors, while the Presidents hit .270, with 47 kills and 17 errors. W&J owned a 50-44 advantage in digs, though the Bearcats had five blocks to the Presidents' two. Both teams recorded five service aces.

Saint Vincent will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 28, when it plays its final home match of the regular season, a 4 p.m. bout with PAC foe Bethany in the Robert S. Carey Student Center.
