SVC sweeps Senior Day twinbill

LATROBE, Pa. (Oct. 8) – The Saint Vincent women's team swept a Senior Day doubleheader with visiting La Roche University, taking both matches by a 9-0 score at the chilly, windswept SVC Courts.
 
In the opener, the Bearcats made quick work of the Redhawks in doubles play. The No. 1 pairing of Rachel Zgurich and Carolina Walters were first off the court with an 8-1 victory, before both the No. 2 pairing of Bella Baumgardner and Emily Pierce and the No. 3 duo of Brenda Flores and Abby Donnelly promptly following with identical 8-0 victories.
 
Marisa Hooper earned the Bearcats' first singles victory of the afternoon, with a 6-1, 6-0 win in the No. 4 spot. Zgurich would then clinch the match win for SVC with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 2. Julia Runk picked up a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 6 singles, before Rebecca Kurylo won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5 and Walters 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1. Lydia Lieb closed out the match with a 6-2, 6-1 decision in the No. 3 singles spot.
 
The afternoon's second match started with the tandems of Zgurich/Kurylo and Hooper/Runk earning 8-0 victories in the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles spots, respectively, before Walters and Pierce teamed up for an 8-4 doubles win at No. 1.
 
After Donnelly put the Bearcats in front 4-0 with a quick 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles, Flores put an exclamation point on her Senior Day celebration by clinching the match win for the Bearcats with a 6-0, 6-0 victory in the sixth spot.
 
Lieb (No. 4), Pierce (No. 2) and Walters (No. 1) all earned 6-0, 6-0 wins, while Baumgardner was victorious by a 6-1, 6-1 score at No. 5 singles.
 
Saint Vincent will continue its busy week with another non-conference matchup on Tuesday, Oct. 10, when it takes on Carlow University at 6 p.m. at Pittsburgh's Schenley Park.
