LATROBE, Pa. (Dec. 9) – The Saint Vincent women's basketball team was unable to sustain a fast start and saw its three-game winning streak snapped with an 80-66 loss to Geneva College in a Presidents' Athletic Conference matchup in the Carey Center.
After the Bearcats (5-4, 4-3 PAC) shot 59 percent in the first quarter en route to a 24-15 lead, the script was flipped, with Geneva (5-4, 5-2 PAC) using 12 three-pointers to outscore SVC 65-42 over the final three frames and pull away for the victory.
Saint Vincent limited Geneva to just 30 percent from the field (25-81), but 13 of the Golden Tornadoes came from behind the arc, including eight in the second half. The visitors were also strong from the foul line, connecting on 17 of 24 freebies, compared to SVC's 11-for-19 mark at the stripe.
Emily Thompson led the Bearcats in defeat, recording a 21-point, 11-rebound double-double.
Madison Weber scored 16 points, on 7-for-10 shooting, while
Emily Cavacini scored 11.
Alana Winkler grabbed 10 rebounds, while adding a game-high four blocked shots and three assists and
Lizzie Bender nine rebounds and three blocked shots.
The Bearcats outscored the Golden Tornadoes, 30-20, in the paint, but Geneva finished with a 59-55 margin on the glass and forced 15 SVC turnovers, turning them into 18 points.
Mia San Nicolas and Taylor Milroy each had 19 points to lead Geneva, while Emily Bucheit scored 12 on the strength of four three-pointers.
The loss snapped a 14-game winning streak for Saint Vincent in its series over Geneva, with the Golden Tornadoes' last victory in the set coming on Dec. 5, 2015.
Saint Vincent will have a seven-day respite over finals week, before returning to action on Saturday, Dec. 16, with a 1 p.m. PAC game at Bethany College.
