Men's volleyball wins second straight AMCC match defeating Hilbert, 3-1

LATROBE, Pa. (Feb. 11)- The Saint Vincent men's volleyball team played host to Hilbert in an AMCC matchup in the Carey Center, where the Bearcats came away with a 3-1 win, their second straight AMCC conference win.
 
Zebadiah Wyant scored double, double for the Bearcats with 17 kills and 17 digs on the afternoon. Matthew Minkin also had 17 kills on the afternoon for Saint Vincent. Zach Wyant recorded a game-high 44 assists, while also tallying 12 digs for the Bearcats as well. Matthew Klasnic added a team-high 21 assists and Shawn McSwiggen tallied 14 kills in the win for SVC.
 
In the first set it was a quick start for Saint Vincent as the Bearcats opened up to a quick 3-0 lead after three attack errors by the Hawks. Both teams traded the next several points, but Saint Vincent still held a 9-5 lead after a kill by Minkin. Hilbert stormed back scoring the next four points in the set to tie the set up at 9-9.
 
Saint Vincent scored the next three points on back-to-back kills by Minkin, followed by a service ace by Zach Wyant to take the lead right back at 12-9. Hilbert answered again going on a quick 4-2 run to cut the SVC to lead to one at 14-13. SVC answered once again, scoring the next three points and four of the next five points on two kills by Zeb Wyant, a service ace by McSwiggen, and a bad set by the Hawks to increase their lead to 18-14.
 
Hilbert kept the set close, scoring four of the next five points to cut the SVC lead to 19-18 but Saint Vincent once again answered. The Bearcats scored six of the final eight points, including ending the set with three straight points on a kill by McSwiggen and two setting errors by the Hawks to win the first set 25-20, taking a 1-0 lead in the match.
 
It was all Saint Vincent again in the second set. The Bearcats scored the first two points of the set on a kill by Michael Pollak and an attack error by Hilbert as SVC held a 2-0 lead. Hilbert responded, tying the set up at 3-3 but the Bearcats came back on the attack. SVC scored the next three points and four of the next five on two kills by Zeb Wyant, a kill by Minkin, and a service error by Hilbert to take a 7-4 lead in the set.
 
The teams traded the next few points as the Bearcats still held an 11-7 lead in the set. Hilbert answered with a 6-2 run to tie the set up at 13-13. The set remained tied at 16-16, 18-18, and 22-22. Saint Vincent once again closed the set out with three straight points on kills by Zachary Mumpower, Zach Wyant, and a service ace by Zeb Wyant to win the set 25-23, taking a 2-0 lead in the match.
 
In the third set, the Bearcats were destined for a sweep as they opened up to a 4-1 lead in set, scoring points on two kills by McSwiggen, a kill by Zeb Wyant, and a kill by Michael Pollak. Saint Vincent continued on the attack, increasing their lead to 11-6. Hilbert answered with a 7-0 run and scored eight of the next nine points to take a 14-12 lead over the Bearcats.
 
The Hawks and Bearcats continued to trade the next several points as Hilbert still held a 21-18 lead. SVC went on to make a late push in the set, scoring the next three points on back-to-back kills by McSwiggen and a kill by Zeb Wyant to tie the set up at 21-21. Hilbert forced a fourth set as they outscored Saint Vincent 4-2 over the final six points to win the set 25-23.
 
It was all Bearcats early on in the fourth set as they scored five of the first six points to take a 5-1 lead in the set. Both teams traded the next few points as SVC still held a 9-5 lead in the set and continued to lead at 12-8. Just as the middle of the set was, both teams continued to split the points as Hilbert slightly cut into the Saint Vincent lead with SVC leading 18-15.
 
The Hawks scored the next four points to take a 19-18 lead in the set, attempting to force a fifth set. The Bearcats scored the next five points on kills by Zeb Wyant, Mumpower, mixed between two attack errors by Hilbert, and a service ace by Zeb Wyant as the Bearcats took a 23-19 lead.
 
After a service error by Saint Vincent, SVC scored the final two points on back-to-back kills by Minkin as Saint Vincent won the set 25-20, winning the match 3-1.
 
Over the course of the match, Saint Vincent compiled 55 kills, seven service aces, and eight blocks. The Bearcats also had 53 assists and 79 digs in the win as well.
 
The Bearcats have a quick turnaround as they play host to Penn State-Behrend in their second AMCC match of the weekend on Sunday, February 12. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. in the Robert S. Carey Center.
