Men's volleyball sweeps Mount Aloysius on the road

CRESSON, Pa. (Feb. 21)- The Saint Vincent men's volleyball team traveled to Amount Aloysius for an AMCC matchup against the Mounties, where the Bearcats came away with a 3-0 sweep on the road.
 
Matthew Minkin, fresh off of his AMCC Offensive Player of the Week honor led the way for Saint Vincent. Minkin recorded a game-high 12 kills for the Bearcats. Shawn McSwiggen added eight kills and one block for SVC. Zach Wyant tallied a game-high 20 assists and nine digs and his brother Zebadiah Wyant recorded seven kills.
 
In the first set, it was back and forth early on as the Bearcats and Mountes traded the first few points as the set was tied 3-3. Saint Vincent scored the next two points on a kill by Zeb Wyant followed by a setting error on Mount Aloysius as the Bearcats took a 5-3 lead.
 
The Mounties stormed back, going on a 4-1 run as the Mounties took a 7-6 lead in the first set. Both the Bearcats and Mounties traded the next few points as the Bearcats tied the set up 9-9. Saint Vincent took control in the set from that point as the Bearcats scored the next three points on a service error, setting error, and attack error, all by Mount Aloysius, as the Bearcats took a 12-9 lead and increased their lead to 13-10 after a point by the Mounties and a kill by Zeb Wyant.
 
After the Mounties scored back-to-back points to cut the Saint Vincent lead to 13-12, the Bearcats responded once again with three straight points. Saint Vincent scored the next three points on two errors by Mount Aloysius and a kill by Zach Wyant as the SVC lead increased to 16-12 and further increased that lead to 18-13.
 
Mount Aloysius attempted to make a late push in the set as they cut the lead to 18-17 but the Bearcats outscored the Mounties 7-5 over the final 12 points, winning the set 25-22 on a kill by Zachary Mumpower, giving SVC a 1-0 lead in the match.
 
In the second set, it was very similar to the first set as Saint Vincent and Mount Aloysius traded the first few points as the Mounties held a slight 4-3 lead. The Bearcats scored three points in a row and four of the next five points on two kills by Zeb Wyant and two kills by Minkin as Saint Vincent took a 7-5 lead.
 
Mount Aloysius scored the next three points as the Mounties took an 8-7 lead. The Bearcats once again answered scoring three points in a row and five of the next six points to take a 12-9 lead in the set. Both teams traded the next couple of points as the Bearcats held a 15-12 lead in the set.
 
Saint Vincent scored three points in a row again and four of the next five points to increase their lead. After a service error and attack error by Mount Aloysius, followed by a service ace by Stephen Laun and a kill by Minkin increased the SVC lead to 19-13. The Mounties scored the next five points to get within one point at 19-18.
 
The Bearcats took full control from that point on in the set. Saint Vincent scored four straight points on four straight errors by the Mounties to take a 23-18 lead. After back-to-back points by the Mounties, SVC ended the set with a kill by Minkin and attack error by the Mounties, as the Bearcats won the set 25-20, taking a 2-0 advantage in the match.
 
In the third set, it was back and forth early on just as the first two sets were and the Bearcats held a slight 4-3 lead and still held a lead at 6-5. From that point on Saint Vincent scored 11 straight points to take a 17-5 commanding lead in the set. Saint Vincent continued on the attack, outscoring Mount Aloysius 8-6 to win the set 25-11, winning the match 3-0.
 
The Bearcats led the Mounties in every major category. Saint Vincent had 31 kills, five service aces, 25 assists, and 32 digs in the win.
 
The Bearcats return to action on Saturday, February 25, when they travel to Medaille in an AMCC matchup. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at Medaille.
