LATROBE, Pa. (March 23) – The Saint Vincent women's lacrosse team dodged the raindrops to roll to its fifth straight win, defeating Mount Aloysius 19-5 in non-conference action at UPMC Field.
Saint Vincent (5-1) outshot Mount Aloysius (0-5) by a 37-13 margin, while six different Bearcat players recorded multi-point games.
Kaylee Bandow, Maggie Edwards and Caroline Mullineaux all recorded eight points to lead the SVC offense, with Bandow and Edwards each scoring six goals with two assists, and Mullineaux three goals and five helpers. Bandow's first goal of the afternoon marked her 100th career point, as the senior midfielder became the 17th player in program history to reach the milestone.
Hannah Marie Starner (2G, 1A) and Carolina Walters (1G, 2A) each finished with three points, while Rachel Thatcher scored a goal and added an assist while pacing the Bearcats with seven draw controls.
The Saint Vincent defense forced 30 Mount Aloysius turnovers, with Mullineaux and Jessica Persin each finishing with three caused turnovers and Bandow two, while the Bearcats also finished with a 26-20 edge in ground balls, led by four apiece from Persin and Mullineaux and three from Starner, Edwards, Thatcher and Alexandria Votovich.
The Bearcats controlled play from the start, with Bandow scoring two goals and Edwards three in the opening quarter to take a 5-1 lead after the first 15 minutes of play.
Starner and Edwards scored in the first four minutes of the second frame to open up a 7-1 lead, and after a pair of quick Mount Aloysius goals, the Bearcats closed the half with three unanswered goals, with two from Mullineaux and one from Starner, to take a 10-3 lead at the break.
Saint Vincent's lead would grow to 16-4 after three third quarter goals from Bandow, two from Edwards and one from Walters, before goals from Bandow, Mullineaux and Thatcher closed out the scoring in the fourth quarter.
Katie Figinski led Mount Aloysius with three goals, while Jordan Mason and Hannah Geissler each scored one apiece. Mountie goalie Zoe Swank made 11 saves in 60 minutes of action.
The Bearcats will continue their long, five-game homestand on Sunday, March 26, welcoming Lycoming College to UPMC Field for a 3 p.m. non-conference bout.
