Offense comes alive in doubleheader sweep against Geneva

LATROBE, Pa. (Apr. 25)- The Saint Vincent baseball team picked up a much needed doubleheader sweep against Geneva at Bearcat Ball Field, winning game one 12-5 and following that up with a 12-6 win in game two.
 
Over the course of the doubleheader Saint Vincent (17-15, 10-6 PAC) outscored Geneva (14-23, 5-13 PAC) 24-11 and recorded 23 hits during the doubleheader in a high scoring day.
 
Game 1- Saint Vincent 12, Geneva 5
The Bearcats scored six runs in the second inning to propel them to the game one win of the doubleheader.
 
L.J. Evans and Connor Bannias led the way for the Bearcats combining for six RBI's in the win. Evans was 2-4 with one run scored and the three RBI's. Bannias on the other hand was 1-3 with one run scored and the three RBI's as well.
 
Dalton Nicklow and Devin Bonine each recorded two hits as well for Saint Vincent, with Bonine also scoring three runs and Nicklow scoring two in the win. Alex Hess, Derek Hald, and Billy Perroz all recorded one hit and scored one run for Saint Vincent as well.
 
Nate Davis twirled a strong pitching effort, picking up the win on the mound for SVC. Davis pitched 5.1 innings, giving up three earned runs on five hits, while striking out eight Golden Tornadoes and walking four as well.
 
After a scoreless first inning, the Saint Vincent bats woke up in the second inning. The Bearcats scored six runs on three hits, while also capitalizing on three errors committed by Geneva. In the inning Bannias picked up an RBI on a walk to give SVC a 1-0 lead.
 
Hess followed Bannias' walk with an RBI single to left field that scored Nicklow and Evans ripped a two-RBI single through the right side, increasing the lead to 4-0. Evans then advanced to third and scored on a throwing error and Hess scored on a wild pitch to conclude the 6-0 inning for SVC.
 
Geneva got one run back in the top of the third but Saint Vincent scored three more runs in the bottom half of the inning. Perroz led off the inning with a double and later scored on a wild pitch, giving the Bearcats a 7-1 lead. Bonine hit in Nicklow on an RBI single and later scored on a wild pitch as SVC led 9-1.
 
Over the remaining innings, Geneva outscored SVC 4-3 but it wasn't enough as the Bearcats took game one. Evans singled in another run in the sixth and Bannias roped a two-RBI single in the seventh that scored Sabol and Hald to conclude the scoring for the Bearcats in the 12-5 game one win.
 
Game 2- Saint Vincent 12, Geneva 6
Saint Vincent scored eight runs in the first three innings of game and that was enough to help push the Bearcats to the afternoon sweep against Geneva.
 
Sabol picked up where he left off in game one, going 3-5 with five RBI's, including a three-run homer for the Bearcats in the game two win. Zack VonStein along with Nicklow and Bonine all had two hits for Saint Vincent in game two as well.
 
Hess, Perroz, and Evans all had hits in the second win of the day for SVC. Perroz scored two runs as did Kyle Belmont who go the start at second base in game two.
 
Andrew Root picked up the win for Saint Vincent in relief. Root worked 2.2 innings, giving up two runs on five hits. Sean McAleer started for the Bearcats on the mound, picking up the no-decision going four innings, giving up four earned runs on six hits, while striking out two batters and walking two as well.
 
Geneva scored first in game two as they plated a run to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning but the Bearcats answered when they came up to bat in the bottom half of the inning. Sabol started the scoring with a two-RBI single that scored Belmont and Bannias, giving SVC a 2-1 lead.
 
Perroz followed scoring on a wild pitch as Saint Vincent led 3-1 and then Sabol scored on a wild pitch as well as the Bearcats led 4-1 at the end of the first inning.
 
After a quiet second inning for both teams, Geneva plated two in the top half of the third inning but once again SVC answered with four runs in the bottom of the third. Bonin and VonStein both ripped RBI singles to make the score 6-3 in favor of Saint Vincent.
 
Hess ripped a sacrifice fly that scored Bonine and Evans followed with an RBI double as Saint Vincent increased their lead to 8-3 heading into the foruth.
 
The GT's tacked on another run in the fourth as they trailed 8-4 but the Bearcats got that run right back in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Bonine put the lead right back to 9-4.
 
Geneva scored a run in the top of the sixth, but Sabol launched his three-run homer in the bottom half of the inning as the Bearcats led 12-5. The Golden Tornadoes plated another run in the seventh but were held scoreless by Saint Vincent the rest of the way as the Bearcats completed the doubleheader sweep with a 12-6 win.
 
The Bearcats are now preparing for a huge PAC doubleheader with Allegheny on Saturday, April 29 with major playoff implications on the line. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Meadville.
