Bearcats earn PAC playoff win over Titans

LATROBE, Pa (Apr. 25) - The Saint Vincent men's tennis team upended Westminster College 6-3 in the quarterfinal round of the Presidents' Athletic Conference playoffs.

In a back-and-forth doubles portion of the match the Bearcats (10-6, 6-2 PAC) emerged with a 3-0 lead over the Titans (4-10, 3-5 PAC). Brian Lee and J.T. Gockel opened play with an 8-0 win at third doubles. Jack Citrone and Sam Butler came back from a 3-5 deficit to claim an 8-7(5) win at first doubles. Evan Ray teamed up with the reigning PAC Rookie of the Week, Kyle Murray, for a nail biting 8-7(4) win at third doubles.

Ray, playing in his last home match at the SVC Courts, made quick work in singles with a 6-0, 6-1 win to put the Bearcats up 4-0 on the day. The Titans won the next two points at sixth and second singles respectively to cut into the Bearcat lead. Shortly thereafter Murray landed the knockout blow for SVC, a 6-4, 6-2 win at fifth singles. The win was the freshman's tenth individual victory of the year. Citrone battled his way to a 6-4, 6-3 win at third singles to finish off the day in singles.

The win propels SVC to the PAC semifinals for the second year in a row. They will face off with reigning PAC champion Grove City at 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 27.
