Men's volleyball sweeps Mount Aloysius in regular season finale

LATROBE, Pa. (Apr. 5)- The Saint Vincent men's volleyball team completed a three set sweep against Mount Aloysius to close out their regular season slate on senior night.
 
Saint Vincent (10-9, 8-5 AMCC) won the first and second sets against Mount Aloysius (4-16, 0-12 AMCC) by scores of 25-19 and came from behind after trailing for most of the third to win 28-26, completing the sweep.
 
Shawn McSwiggen was one of two Bearcats with double digit kills on the night, recording 14 kills, while also tallying a team-high four service aces. Matthew Minkin was the second SVC player with double-digit kills, compiling 13 kills, while also scooping up seven digs.
 
Zach Wyant added 32 assists and five kills for the Bearcats and senior, Joshua Canty had seven assists and seven digs on his senior night for Saint Vincent. Michael Pollak also recorded a service ace on his senior night as well for SVC.
 
Mount Aloysius got off to a hot start early, taking an early 5-3 lead in the first set. The Bearcats stormed back, scoring the next four points on kills from Pollak and Minkin, followed by a service ace from Wyant followed by another kill from Minkin to give SVC a 7-5 lead.
 
Over the next few points the Mounties climbed back into the game, cutting the Saint Vincent lead to 15-14 but the Bearcats had another answer. SVC scored the next five points and six of the next seven with four of the points coming on errors by Mount Aloysius and two coming on kills by Wyant and Minkin to give the Bearcats a commanding 21-15 lead.
 
Saint Vincent closed out the set playing even with Mount Aloysius to win the first set (25-19), taking a 1-0 lead in the match.
 
In the second set the Bearcats and Mounties traded the first few points of the set as the set was tied at 12-12. That's when Saint Vincent went on a 6-0 run. The Bearcats scored six straight on two kills by Minkin, a kill from Wyant, and three service aces by McSwiggen to take an 18-12 lead.
 
The Bearcats never looked back from that point as the closes the Mounties got was four points but Saint Vincent closed the set out scoring three of the final four points on a service error by Mount Aloysius and two kills from McSwiggen, as SVC won the second set (25-19), taking a 2-0 lead in the match.
 
In the third set, Mount Aloysius controlled and held the lead for the majority of the set. The Mounties took a 19-15 lead and looked destined to continue the match and force a fourth set, but Saint Vincent had other plans in mind.
 
The Bearcats went on a 7-3 run to tie the match up at 22-22, finally gaining control in the set. The lead went back-and-forth and was tied several times at 23-23, 24-24, 25-25, and 26-26. That's when Saint Vincent scored the final two points of the set on kills by Wyant and Minkin to win the third set (28-26), completing the 3-0 sweep in the regular season finale.
 
Saint Vincent recorded eight service aces a team and had 43 kills, holding the Mounties to just 23 kills. The Bearcats also added 42 assists compared to the Mounties 22 and recorded 38 digs, where Mount Aloysius recorded just 19 digs.
 
Saint Vincent will now advance to the AMCC Tournament for the first time in their four-year program history. The Bearcats will host an opponent to be determined on Tuesday, April 11 in the Robert S. Carey Center. The first-round matchup is slated to begin at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
