Women's volleyball falls in final match at Oberlin Invitational

OBERLIN, Ohio (Sept. 16)- The Saint Vincent women's volleyball team ended their final game of the Oberlin Invitational with a 3-1 defeat against Wooster.
 
The Bearcats lost the first two sets by scores of 25-22 and 25-12, before winning the third set 25-14 and losing the fourth set 25-14.
 
Kaelyn Staples led the way for the Bearcats with 14 kills, while also recording one service ace. Madie Eagler recorded a career-high and match-high 32 assists, while also recording 12 digs. Stacie Ramos led the Bearcats with 13 digs in the loss for SVC.
 
Luciana Polk and Jessica Hughes added six kills in the loss as well for Saint Vincent.
 
It was all Wooster in the early portions of the first set as the Fighting Scots scored six of the first seven points. The Bearcats answered scoring six of the next seven points, coming on three attack errors by Wooster, followed by a service ace from Polk and kills from Staples and Hughes to tie the match up at 7-7.
 
The teams traded the next several points back-and-forth as the match remained tied at 19-19. The Fighting Scots went on to score six of the final nine points to win the set (25-22), taking a 1-0 lead in the match.
 
The Fighting Scots took their momentum from the end of the first set and carried that into the entirety of the second set. SVC opened the set up with a quick 2-0 lead on a service error and kill by Lauren Fox but Wooster controlled the rest of the set.
 
Wooster tied the set up at 3-3 and took their first lead at 4-3 and never lost the lead in the set the rest of the way. The Bearcats cut the lead to 8-7 but that's the closes they'd get it as the Fighting Scots closed the set out on a 17-5 run to win their second straight set (25-12), going up 2-0.
 
The Bearcats had full control of the third set. SVC scored four of the first five points on kills by Staples and Hughes, mixed between two service aces from Ramos. Wooster responded, cutting the lead to 8-7 but Saint Vincent answered with a 7-0 run to take a 15-7 lead and that's the closest Wooster got the rest of the set.
 
SVC also scored three of the final four points of the set on two errors by the Fighting Scots and a kill from Fox to win the set (25-14), cutting the Wooster lead to 2-1.
 
The Fighting Scots put the finishing touches on their win in the fourth set. The teams traded the first several points as Wooster held a slight one-point lead at 7-6 and never lost the lead. They increased their lead to 16-7 and closed the match out on 9-7 run to win the final set (25-14), and the match 3-1.
 
As a team, SVC compiled 35 kills, seven aces, 35 assists, and 50 digs in the loss.
 
The Bearcats return to action on Tuesday, September 19 when they travel to Steubenville, Ohio for a matchup against Franciscan. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
