GREENVILLE, Pa. (Sept. 18) – The Saint Vincent women's tennis team improved to 4-1 on the fall campaign with a 9-0 road shutout of Thiel College.
The Bearcats (4-1, 1-1 Presidents' Athletic Conference) took a quick 3-0 lead after three brisk doubles wins.
Abby Donnelly and
Bella Baumgardner were the first off the court after a quick 8-0 at No. 2 doubles, before the first doubles tandem of
Carolina Walters and
Rachel Zgurich produced an 8-1 win. In the No. 3 spot,
Emily Pierce and
Marisa Hooper gave SVC its third win of the day with an 8-3 victory.
After Donnelly produced the Bearcats' first singles win by a 6-0, 6-1 score in the No. 5 spot, Walters clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at first singles.
Hooper and
Rebecca Kurylo produced matching 6-0, 6-0 wins in the fourth and sixth spots, respectively, before Pierce gave SVC an 8-0 lead in the match with a 6-3, 6-1 win at third singles.
Zgurich would then put the finishing touches on the shutout win. In the No. 2 spot, the rookie fell behind with a 6-4 loss in set one, before evening the match with a 6-2 victory in the second set. She would then claim the super tiebreak, 12-10, to earn the comeback win.
The Bearcats will now have a four-day respite before returning to action on Friday, Sept. 22, with a 4 p.m. match against PAC foe Geneva at the SVC Courts.
