Women's tennis falls in PAC tourney

LATROBE, Pa. (Oct. 17) – The Saint Vincent women's tennis team saw its season come to an end with a 4-1 loss to Franciscan in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament at the SVC Courts.

The Bearcats, who were hosting a PAC playoff match for the first time in program history, wrap up the fall with a 13-4 overall record.

Senior Abby Donnelly earned the Bearcats' lone win of the day with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph at No. 6 singles. She closed out the fall with an 11-3 overall singles mark.

The visiting Barons secured the doubles point with a pair of victories, as the SVC tandem of grad student Isabella Lane and sophomore Rachel Zgurich were defeated, 6-1, in the No. 1 spot, and juniors Emily Pierce and Marisa Hooper were topped 6-2 at No. 2.

In singles play, Hooper was leading, 6-3, 4-0, at No. 5, when the match was called after Franciscan earned the clinching fourth point. Lane was also involved in a tight match at No. 2, trailing 6-3, 5-4, when the match was ended.

The Bearcats were playing without junior Carolina Walters, who was sidelined due to injury. Walters, who played in the No. 1 singles and doubles spot for the duration of the season, closed the fall with a perfect 15-0 singles mark, the first player in team history to finish a season unbeaten having played in at least 10 matches.

Franciscan advances to the PAC semifinals, and will face Westminster, which defeated Washington & Jefferson in the second PAC semifinal.

Saint Vincent, which was making its fifth consecutive PAC Championship Tournament appearance, will return to action in March with its annual southern spring break trip.
