Bearcats Down Chatham in Big PAC Matchup

LATROBE, Pa. (Oct. 30)- The Saint Vincent women's volleyball team defeated Chatham 3-1 in a big PAC matchup in the Robert S. Carey Center on Tuesday night.

The Bearcats (11-11, 5-2 PAC), dropped the opening set 27-25, before winning the next three sets in a row over the Cougars (9-11, 5-2 PAC). Saint Vincent won those three consecutive sets by scores of 27-25, 25-23, and 25-22.

Meegan Williams led the way for SVC with a match-high 20 kills, while also adding 16 digs in the win as well. Kaelyn Staples-Klasnic had a double-double for Saint Vincent as well with ten kills and 19 digs. 

Vivian Poach recorded a team-high 40 assists and also added 23 digs for SVC, while Stacie Ramos totaled 25 digs for the Bearcats in the 3-1 win against Chatham. 

Lauren Fox totaled 11 kills and four blocks, while Jessica Hughes added three blocks of her own and Emma Harclerode secured four service aces for the Bearcats as well.

Chatham controlled the majority of the early to middle portion of the opening set. The Cougars led 6-2 and increased that lead to 20-14 by the later portions of the set. Saint Vincent stormed back with 10-4 run to tie the set at 24-24. After an attack error by Chatham to put SVC up 25-24, the Cougars scored the next three points to win the opening set (27-25), as the Bearcats found themselves trailing 1-0.

It was a different story in the second set as the teams traded points as the set was tied 17-17, before Saint Vincent took a 19-7 lead on back-to-back kills from Fox and Williams, both coming on assists from Poach.

Chatham came back to tie the set at 24-24, before the Cougars took a 25-24 advantage. SVC scored the final three points on two attack errors by the Cougars, followed by a kill from Williams to win the set (27-25) and tie the match at 1-1.

Once again, the Bearcats and Cougars traded points back-and-forth as the set was tied 13-13. Saint Vincent scored the next four points, two of which came on kills by Fox and Staples-Klasnic to put the Bearcats up 17-13. Chatham answered with a 10-4 run as Saint Vincent found themselves trailing 23-21. SVC answered with the final four points in the set, two of which came on kills by Williams to win the set (25-23), taking a 2-1 lead in the match.

The teams traded points in the fourth set as both maintained slight leads early with Chatham holding a 17-16 advantage. Saint Vincent scored the next four points, two of which came on a kill from Staples-Klasnic and one coming on a service ace by Poach to put SVC up 20-17.

After Saint Vincent extended their lead to 23-19, Chatham scored four points to cut the lead to 23-233, forcing an SVC timeout. Out of the timeout, the Bearcats scored the final two points in the set on kills by Williams and Fox, both of which came on assists from Poach to win the set (25-22) clinching the 3-1 win for Saint Vincent.

The Bearcats had ten service aces as a team and led the match in blocks at 9-7 as well. The Cougars led the match in digs at 116-110, while the Cougars also had 59 assists compared to SVC's 53. Kills were 61-56 in favor of the Cougars over the course of the match.

Saint Vincent totaled a .188 hitting percentage, while the Cougars hit .184.

SVC returns to action on Saturday, November 2 when they travel to Franciscan for another PAC matchup. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday in Steubenville, Ohio.
