Walters Secures Match Clinching Point for SVC in 4-3 win at Westminster

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. (Oct. 8)- The Saint Vincent women's tennis team secured a big 4-3 win on the road at Westminster in the Bearcats PAC regular season finale on Tuesday evening.

Carolina Walters earned the match clinching point for Saint Vincent (12-3, 6-3 PAC) in the top singles spot. Abby Donnelly and Marisa Hooper both earned two wins on the afternoon as well with wins in singles and doubles over the Titans (6-2, 4-2 PAC). Saint Vincent earned the lone doubles point, before splitting the six singles matches with Westminster.

After a loss in the top doubles spot, Lydia Lieb along with Donnelly secured the first win of the afternoon for SVC. Donnelly and Lieb recorded a 6-4 win in third doubles to even up doubles play. Emily Pierce and Hooper followed with a 6-4 win in second doubles to clinch the doubles point, putting the Bearcats up 1-0 in the match.

Just as they did in doubles, Westminster won the first match in singles play as well with a win in the third singles spot, tying the match at 1-1. The Bearcats quickly answered as Hooper recorded a 6-1, 6-1 victory in the fifth singles spot to regain the lead at 2-1.

The Titans followed with another victory, this one coming at second singles as the match was once again tied (2-2). The back-and-forth match continued as Donnelly recorded her second win of the evening, this one coming at sixth singles. She picked up a 6-0, 6-2 victory to put the Bearcats back up 3-2.

Westminster followed, tying the match at 3-3 after a victory at number four singles as the match came down to the top singles spot. That's when Walters secured a thrilling 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 victory clinching the win for the Bearcats, and also finishing her regular season undefeated in singles play inside the President's Athletic Conference.

The Bearcats will return to action on Sunday, October 13 as they take on Carlow in SVC's fall regular season finale. First serves are scheduled for 12:30 p.m. on Sunday. Sunday also marks senior day for the Bearcats as senior day festivities will take place prior to the match. Saint Vincent has already clinched a spot in next week's PAC playoffs with a time and opponent for the playoff match to be determined.
