Men's Volleyball Splits Tri-Match at Wilson

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. (Feb. 3)- The Saint Vincent men's volleyball team split a doubleheader, losing to Wilkes 3-0 and defeating Wilson 3-0 in their final match of the day.

The Bearcats lost by set scores of 25-18, 25-19, and 25-22.
 
Shawn McSwiggen led the way for the Bearcats with seven kills. Rocco Marino tallied four kills and Zachary Mumpower recorded three kills as well.
 
Zach Wyant led Saint Vincent with 16 assists. Matthew Klasnic totaled six digs as did McSwiggen.
 
In the first set, it was all Wilkes. The Colonels quickly opened up to an 11-4 lead, but the Bearcats answered, scoring the next four points to cut the lead to 11-8.
 
However, Wilkes answered the Saint Vincent run, over the next several points as the Bearcats still trailed 22-18. Wilkes scored the final three points of the set to win the set (25-18), taking a 1-0 lead in the match.
 
It was much of the same story in the second set as Wilkes quickly opened up to a four-point, 10-6 lead. Saint Vincent answered scoring five of the next six to cut tie the set up at 11-11. The teams traded the next couple of points as the set remained tied at 15-15.
 
Wilkes went on another little run, this one an 8-2 run to take a 23-17 lead and after trading the next four points as the Colonels won the second set (25-19), as they took a 2-0 lead.
 
Wilkes opened up to a quick lead at six points (11-5). Saint Vincent began to cut into the Colonels lead at that point, cutting the Wilkes lead in half at 20-17. The teams continued to trade back-and-forth as Wilkes closed out the set (25-22), winning the match 3-0.

Saint Vincent defeated Wilson, winning all three sets in their second match by scores of 25-19, 25-14, and 25-19.
 
McSwiggen led the way with 13 kills, while Zebadiah Wyant recording eight kills and Marino tallying four more kills in the second game as well.
 
Zach Wyant recorded 29 assists in the second game as well.
 
It was back-and-forth early on in the first set as the teams played to a 7-7 tie. Saint Vincent scored the next three points on an attack error by Wilson, followed by a service ace and kill from McSwiggen, giving the Bearcats a 10-7 lead.
 
Saint Vincent continued on the attack, increasing their lead to six at 23-17. After two points from Wilson, the Bearcats ended the set with a service error from Wilson and kill from Zeb Wyant as the Bearcats won the set (25-19), taking a 1-0 lead in the match.
 
It was all SVC in the second set. The Bearcats quickly opened up to a six-point lead at 12-6. Over the next few points, Saint Vincent increased their lead to eight after four straight points, one coming on a kill by Chrystiaan Sexton, giving the Bearcats a 17-9 lead.
 
SVC scored seven of the final ten points in the set as well, with McSwiggen picking up another kill as the Bearcats won the set (25-14) and the match 2-0.
 
The Bearcats Phoenix once again traded points to open the third set as the score was tied 8-8. The teams continued to split the next several points as well with Saint Vincent holding a slight 17-16 lead.
 
Saint Vincent outscored Wilson 8-3 over the remaining 11 points to win the set (25-19) and the match, 3-0.
 
Saint Vincent will enjoy the week off, before returning to action on Sunday, February 11, hosting a tri-match against Penn State-Altoona and Mount Aloysius in the Robert S. Carey Center. The Bearacts will first take on Penn State-Altoona at 11 a.m. and then Mount Aloysius 2:30 p.m.
