LATROBE, Pa. (March 1) -- The Saint Vincent women's tennis team scored an 8-1 victory over Mount Aloysius in a chilly, non-conference matchup at the SVC courts.
The victory moves SVC to 10-6 on the season, clinching the Bearcats' second straight 10-win season, and third in the past five years.
The Bearcats jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in doubles play. The No. 3 pairing of
Marisa Hooper and
Bella Baumgardner secured SVC's first victory with an 8-0 blanking, before
Lydia Lieb and
Abby Donnelly teamed up for an 8-2 win in the No. 2 spot. The Bearcats' No. 1 pairing of
Emily Pierce and
Carolina Walters would then close out the doubles portion of the afternoon with an 8-3 win.
Baumgardner earned the Bearcats' first singles victory with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6, before Walters clinched the match for the hosts with a 6-0, 6-0 decision at No. 1.
Rebecca Kurylo won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 singles, while
Rachel Zgurich won the No. 2 singles match by a 6-0, 6-4 score, and
Julia Runk closed out the match with a 7-5, 6-1 trumph at No. 5.
The Bearcats will now travel south for their annual spring break trip, and will open the sojourn on Wednesday, March 6, with a 2 p.m. match against Buena Vista University in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
