Bearcats Fall to Drew, 12-5

AUBURNDALE, Fla. (Mar. 5)- The Saint Vincent baseball team was defeated 12-5 by Drew University in the Bearcats second game of their spring break trip to Florida.

Drew (3-3) scored two runs in the bottom of the first but, the Bearcats (0-2) came back with one in the second and two runs in the third to take a 3-2 lead. A six-run bottom of the third inning helped Drew gain the lead back and the Rangers never lost it the rest of the way.

Billy Perroz led the way for the Bearcats in the loss, going 4-5 with two RBI's and one run scored as well. Dalton Nicklow continued his hot hitting as well, going 2-3, including a triple with one run scored and a walk as well.

Devin Bonine, J'Shawn Taylor, and Matthew Lockwich all recorded one hit to add to SVC's total. Along with Perroz, Lockwich, Kyle Belmont, and L.J. Evans all recorded RBI's for Saint Vincent.

Nate Davis took the loss on the mound for SVC, pitching two plus innings, giving up six earned runs on five hits, while also striking out four batters and walking three batters as well.

Christopher Rayman and Joseph Burke both pitched one scoreless inning in relief, while also striking two batters out each.

Drew struck first in the bottom of the first inning as Billy Coleman hit a 2-RBI single to centerfield coming with two outs, giving the Rangers an early 2-0 lead.

The Bearcats got one of those runs back in the second inning as Lockwich ripped an RBI-single to center field of his own, scoring Evans to cut the lead in half at 2-1. Saint Vincent scored two more in the third inning as well, as Perroz singled through the left side scoring Nicklow to tie the game at 2-2.

Belmont followed with an RBI-sac fly to center which scored Perroz to give Saint Vincent a 3-2 lead heading into the bottom of the inning.

The Rangers answered with a six-run bottom of the third inning, forcing Saint Vincent to pull Davis and go to the bullpen as Drew took an 8-3 lead.

In the fourth, the Bearcats got a couple of those runs back as Perroz reached on an infield single just over the pitchers' head, scoring Lockwich (8-4) and Evans followed with an RBI-groundout which scored Ben Hudson to cut the lead to 8-5.

It was all Drew the rest of the way as the Rangers bullpen would go on to toss five scoreless innings in relief. The Rangers added two insurance runs in the fourth and one in each of the fifth and seventh innings as well to hand the Bearcats their second straight loss to open the season.

For Drew, Coleman, along with Anthony Hernandez, and Kyle Johnson all recorded two hits for the Rangers. Aidan Bauer got the win on the mound in relief, pitching four scoreless innings, shutting Saint Vincent out while allowing just one hit.
