Dominican tops SVC in Florida

AUBURNDALE, Fla. (March 7) –  The Saint Vincent College baseball team was defeated, 8-0, by Dominican University at The Russ Matt Classic at Lake Myrtle Park.

The Saint Vincent pitching staff issued 10 free passes, while Dominican scored four second-inning runs and would lead the rest of the way.

The Bearcats (0-4) were limited to just five hits on the day, led by a 2-4 showing from junior designated hitter Dalton Nicklow. In his first collegiate start, freshman third baseman Jacob Auld went 1-3 with a double, while sophomores T.J. Bucy and Anthony D'Urso each tallied pinch-hit singles.

Cody May started on the mound and took the loss for SVC, working 1.2 innings and allowing four runs on two hits with five walks. May was one of six pitchers to see action for the Bearcats, with Christopher Rayman and Jacob Hess each throwing scoreless innings, and Alex Polito throwing two scoreless, hitless innings, with three strikeouts over the eighth and ninth. While they issued 10 walks, the SVC pitchers surrendered just seven Dominican hits.

All four second-inning runs were scored by Dominican with two outs. The Stars loaded the bases on two walks and a hit batter, before May recorded a strikeout and a grounder to Auld at third base, who cut down the lead runner at the plate. Dominican kept the inning alive, with each of its next four batters reaching via two walks and two singles to bring home the four runs.

Dominican added two more two-out runs in the fourth, on two hits, a walk and an error, before closing the scoring with two more runs in the seventh, including an unearned tally, to account for the final score.

Saint Vincent had men on base in six different innings but was unable to come up with a timely hit, stranding seven runners.

Payton Brooks started and earned the win for Dominican, working seven shutout innings and allowing just four hits, with eight strikeouts and just one walk.

Saint Vincent will be back in action on Friday, March 8, taking part in an unconventional split doubleheader in Florida. The Bearcats will open the day with a 9 a.m. matchup in Auburndale against Rowan University, ranked No. 16 in the most recent NCBWA Top-25 poll,  before traveling to Davenport, Florida, to face Trine under the lights at 7:45 p.m.
