LATROBE, Pa. (Feb. 24)- The Saint Vincent men's volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 sweep against Carlow on Monday night in the Carey Center.
The Bearcats (5-6, 0-2 PAC) breezed through the three sets, defeating the Celtics (0-8) by set scores of 25-9, 25-16, and 25-18 to earn the win.
Tyler Nelson led Saint Vincent with 10 kills in the match.
Jackson Genicola fresh off of his PAC Newcomer of the Week honor, recorded a match-high 18 assists and five service aces. The freshman also recorded seven digs to lead Saint Vincent.
Tommy Barrick added five kills, while
Ezra Glenn totaled three of his own.
Nicolas Serapiglia added four assists and three service aces as well.
Saint Vincent quickly jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the opening set, before increasing that lead to 8-1. Over the next several points, SVC outscored the Celtics 12-5 as they increased their lead to 14 at 20-6. The Bearcats scored five of the final seven points to win the set (25-9) and take a 1-0 lead in the match. SVC won the set on a service ace from
Zebadiah Wyant.
It was much more back-and-forth for the early portions of the second set. The Bearcats and Celtics traded points as the set was tied 9-9. Saint Vincent then went on a 8-2 run to regain control with a 17-11 advantage in the set. It was all SVC in the final portion of the set as well as the Bearcats outscored Carlow 8-5 over the final points to win the set (25-16), giving Saint Vincent a commanding 2-0 lead.Â
The Bearcats closed it out in the third set as they never trailed in the set. The Bearcats jumped out to a quick 13-6 advanatge and never looked back. Saint Vincent would go on to win the set (25-18) on a kill and service ace by
Kolton Butina to win the match 3-0.
As a team, Saint Vincent hit .309 and led in every major statistical category.Â
SVC will return to PAC play on Friday, February 28 as they host Bethany. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the Robert S. Carey Center.
