Men's volleyball wins home opener against Carlow

LATROBE, Pa. (Feb. 6)- The Saint Vincent men's volleyball team picked up a 3-0 win against Carlow in the Bearcats 2025 home opener on Thursday night.

The Bearcats (3-4) defeated the Celtics (0-4) in straight sets after picking up set wins by scores of 25-9, 25-14, and 25-18.

Zebadiah Wyant led the Bearcats in the win with eight kills, six digs, and one block. Jackson Genicola added 24 assists and four kills, while Tommy Barrick totaled four kills and six digs. 

Saint Vincent hit an impressive .265 in the victory.

The match that the Bearcats dominated began with Saint Vincent opening up to a 7-0 lead in the opening set. The Bearcats run continued increasing their lead to 17-4 and then 21-9. SVC went on to score the final four points in the set on kills from McSwiggen and Rocco Marino, followed by two Carlow attack errors to win the opening set for Saint Vincent (25-9) and giving them a 1-0 lead in the match.

The second set started the same way the opening set did as the Bearcats quickly jumped out to a 7-0 lead. This time, Carlow and Saint Vincent traded points back-and-forth as the Bearcats lead held at seven at 15-8. Saint Vincent went on to outscore the Celtics 10-6 over the remaining points, closing the set out on back-to-back kills from Chrystiaan Sexton and Ezra Glenn to win the set (25-14), taking a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.

It was much closer early on in the third set as the Bearcats held a slight 7-6 advantage. Saint Vincent then went on a quick 8-0 run to push their lead to nine at 15-6. Carlow climbed back into the set, cutting the lead to five at 22-17, before SVC closed the match out scoring three of the final four points on a kill and service ace from Glenn, followed by a kill from Genicola to win the set (25-18) and the match, 3-0.

SVC recorded 34 kills to Carlow's nine, 14 service aces to the Celtics two, while also leading in assists 31-9 and digs 36-13.

Saint Vincent returns to action on Tuesday, Februay 11 with a trip to Mount Aloysius to take on the Mounties. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. in Cresson on Tuesday.
