HILTON HEAD, Sc. (Mar. 3) -
Isabella Lane highlighted the women's tennis Spring Break opening 7-0 victory over Johnson & Wales by claiming her 100th career collegiate win.
Due to court time constrains the match was contested with singles play before doubles.
Lane opened the match in exciting fashion, rolling to a 6-0, 6-3 win at second singles to put SVC up 1-0 early. The win was the 100th combined victory of the Graduate Student's career. Following her off the court was
Marisa Hooper, who claimed a 6-0, 6-0 win at fifth singles to extend the Bearcat lead to 2-0.
Julia Runk was next off with a 6-1, 6-1 win in the six hole.
Emily Pierce secured the Green and Gold win with a 6-2, 6-1 win at third singles shortly before
Lydia Lieb claimed a 6-4, 6-2 win at four to put the Bearcats up 5-0 on the day.
Rachel Zgurich solidified the singles sweep for SVC with a 7-6(6), 6-4 marathon match in the top spot.
With the match already in hand starting doubles the Bearcats did not relent, securing a sweep of the doubles point to set the final score at 7-0. The Freshman duo of
Ashley Thiel and
Sydney McWreath led the way with a 6-1 win at third doubles, followed by a 6-2 win at second by Lieb and
Bella Baumgardner, and the punctuating point, a 7-5 comeback win at the top spot by Pierce and Hooper.
The win continues a phenomenal season for the women's team, as they improve to 15-4 overall. The Bearcats will hit the courts for their final Spring Break match on Tuesday, March 4 at 10:00AM when they face Bridgewater College at the Van der Meer Tennis Center.
