Baseball splits PAC opening doubleheader against Bethany

LATROBE, Pa. (March 21)- The Saint Vincent baseball team split their Presidents Athletic Conference opening doubleheader against Bethany on Friday afternoon.

The Bearcats (7-8) fell in the first game by a scored of 8-2 to the Bison (6-8), but bounced back in the second game with an 11-3 victory, taking advantage of Bethany errors and getting a great pitching outing.

Game 1- Bethany 8, Saint Vincent 2

Despite eight hits and some good scoring opportunities the Bearcats were only able to plate two runs which was not enough to keep up with an 11-hit and eight-run performance from Bethany.

Starter Tyler Dancu only lasted 3.1 innings, giving up six hits, five runs total with four being earned and three walks. On offense six different Bearcats recorded a hit with Dalton Nicklow picking up two hits and an RBI. Nolan Hurd also picked up an RBI to account for the two runs scored in the game for the Bearcats.

Bethany got started early with a two-run single after an error put runners on first and second. Dancu was able to avoid complete disaster working out of a bases loaded situation, but the Bearcats still found themselves in an early hole.

After adding on another run in the third inning the Bearcats pulled Dancu after he put runners on first and third with one out in the fourth. Andrew Root took over and pitched well, but a sacrifice fly and another throwing error allowed 2 more runs to score, putting the score at 5-0 Bethany. The Bearcats were able to fight back a bit with a Nicklow RBI double and a Hurd sacrifice to 2nd but still found themselves down 5-2 heading into the 5th inning.

Bethnay once again took advantage of Saint Vincent errors with a 2 RBI single in the 6th inning after a throwing error put runners on 2nd and 3rd. They added another run with a double down the line to cement their victory at 8-2.

Eric Harris and Connor Soska both tossed scoreless innings in relief for the Bearcats as well in the loss.

Game 2- Saint Vincent 11, Bethany 3

The Bearcats bounced back to win game two thanks to some great pitching and opportunistic hitting.

Jeremy Kreuzwieser pitched a gem for the Bearcats striking out seven batters over 6.1 innings of work while allowing just five hits and one earned run. On offense the Bearcats picked up 11 runs on only eight hits thanks to patient at bats and timely hitting to capitalize on Bethany errors. Kyle Belmont led the way with three RBIs with Nolan Hurd, Derek Hald, Ben Hudson, and Nathan Whiteman all adding two RBI's each.

After a perfect 1-2-3 inning from Kreuzwieser the Bearcats immediately got to work in the bottom of the first inning. After two quick outs, the bases were swiftly loaded after Derek Hald was hit by a pitch following a single and a walk. From there, the Bison pitcher could not locate his pitches, walking both Hudson and Whiteman to give the Bearcats a 2-0 lead while only recording one hit.

The second inning was more of the same with the Bearcats scoring three runs on zero hits. Two walks and a catchers interference call loaded the bases with no one out. Hurd then hit what should have been an out but it was misplayed by the third basemen allowing two runs to score. With still no outs recorded another hit by pitch loaded the bases again. This time Hald flew out, no special circumstances but it did allow another run to score on the sacrifice fly. With only one hit on the game the Bearcats found themselves up 5-0.

Bethany was able to claw at the lead a bit in the third with a double and then two ground outs to first advance the runner, and then score him.

In the fourth inning the Bearcats added on with a Hald single scoring Hurd followed by a Hudson SAC fly and a Whiteman RBI single to put the Bearcats up 8-1 at the end of the fourth inning.

Bethany was able to plate a run in the sixth thanks an error, but the Bearcats immediately hit back with a bases clearing double from Belmont to push their lead back out to 11-2.

Bethany was able to add another run in the eighth but this game was long over thanks to an impressive offensive output and an absolute gem from Kreuzwieser. The Bearcats split the double header wining game two 11-3.

Saint Vincent will look to continue the winning of this second game into Sunday when they will face Hiram College at home in a doubleheader. Game one I scheduled to start at 1 p.m. at Bearcat Ballfield with game two scheduled to follow up at 3:30 p.m.
