LATROBE, Pa. (March 23)- The Saint Vincent baseball team fell in both games of a non-conference doubleheader against Hiram at Bearcat Ballfield on Sunday afternoon.
Saint Vincent (7-10, 1-1 PAC) fell in the opening game by a score of 5-1, while following that up with a 5-2 loss to the Terriers (5-6) in the second game of the doubleheader.
Game 1- Hiram 5, Saint Vincent 1
In the opener, it was all Hiram. The Bearcats were limited to just six hits, scoring just the one run as they fell in the opener of the doubleheader.
Derek Hald and
Kyle Belmont combined to record four of Saint Vincent's six hits in the loss. Hald was 2-3 with one run scored, while Belmont also went 2-3 with one RBI.
Ben Hudson and
Nathan Whiteman recorded SVC's other two hits, while Whiteman also walked once in the loss.
Garrett Navitsky took the loss on the mound for Saint Vincent, pitching four innings allowing three earned runs on five hits, while striking out six and walking one.
Garrett Knapp and
Josh Dailey both pitched scoreless innings in relief for SVC in the loss.
The Terriers quickly jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning and that 2-0 lead held through three innings of play. Hiram added a run in the fourth to push their lead to 3-0 heading into the bottom of the inning.
Saint Vincent finally got on the board as Belmont ripped an RBI-single to center, scoring Hald to cut the lead to 3-1. That run turned out to be the only run Saint Vincent would score in the game, as Hiram went on to add two more insurance runs in the fifth to hand the Bearcats the non-conference loss.
Saint Vincent scored their one run on six hits, committing one error, while Hiram scored their five runs on eight hits, not committing an erro.
Game 2- Hiram 5, Saint Vincent 2
It was much of the same story in the second game of the day as the Terriers were in control for the majority of the second game as well. SVC was once again limited to just six hits in the loss.
Ben Hudson accounted for half of the Bearcats hits in the second game of the doubleheader. Hudson went 3-3 with a run scored and Two RBI's, all of which came on his two-run homer in the sixth inning.
Brennen Freiwald went 1-3 with one run scored, while
Jacob Auld went 1-2 with a walk, and
Julian Santana was 1-3 in the loss.
Troy Gilpin took the loss on the mound, pitching three innings, giving up four runs (two earned) on seven hits, while striking out one and walking one as well.
Evan Wiewiora tossed two scoreless innings in relief, allowing three hits, while recording one strikeout as well.
Alex Polito tossed a scoreless inning in relief as well for Saint Vincent.
Hiram scored one in the first inning, three in the third, and one in the sixth to quickly jump out to a 5-0 lead. Hudson ripped his two-run homer for Saint Vincent in the bottom of the sixth, but it was a too little too late as Hiram held on for the win, shutting SVC down in the seventh inning.
Saint Vincent scored their two runs on just six hits, committing one error, while Hiram scored their five runs on 12 hits, not committing an error.
The Bearcats will now return to PAC play on Tuesday, March 25, hosting Geneva in a doubleheader. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 1 p.m. with game two to follow at Bearcat Ballfield.
