LATROBE, Pa. (March 25)- The Saint Vincent baseball team picked up a home doubleheader Presidents Athletic Conference sweep against Geneva on Tuesday afternoon at Bearcat Ballfield.
The Bearcats (9-10, 3-1 PAC) picked up a 6-2 win in game one after a strong pitching outing from
Sean McAleer. Saint Vincent followed that up with an 11-5 win in game two against the Golden Tornadoes to complete the conference sweep.
Game 1- Saint Vincent 6, Geneva 2
Saint Vincent was led by a strong pitching performance from
Sean McAleer in the opening game of the day. The Saint Vincent offense wasn't bad at all, tagging Geneva with six runs on ten hits.
McAleer pitched 5.2 strong innings on the mound for the Bearcats, allowing one run (zero earned) on six hits, while racking up ten strikeouts and walking a batter as well.
Andrew Root came in relief of McAleer earning a 3.1 inning save, allowing one run (zero earned) on two hits, while picking up two strikeouts as well.
Dalton Nicklow led the way on offense for Saint Vincent, going 3-3 with one RBI and a walk as well.
Kyle Belmont added a hit, RBI, and two runs scored for the Bearcats in the win as well.
Lane Golkosky added a pinch-hit RBI single, while
Nathan Whiteman,
Ben Hudson, and
Nolan Hurd all recorded one hit each for SVC.
Geneva capitalized on a couple of Saint Vincent in the first inning to bring around the first run of the game and take a 1-0 lead. That 1-0 advantage would hold over the next two and a half innings.
Mario Disso finally got the Bearcats on the board with an RBI-groundout to shortstop, scoring Belmont to tie the game at 1-1 in the third. Hald followed with an infield single, scoring Whiteman to give the Bearcats a 2-1 lead and a lead they wouldn't lose again the rest of the game.
The Bearcats added anothe run in the fifth inning on an RBI-double from Nicklow, scoring Hald to increase the Saint Vincent lead to 3-1. Two innings later, Hurd hit an RBI-sac fly scoring Whiteman to push the lead to 4-1. Geneva cut the lead to 4-2 with a run in the top of the eighth, but Saint Vincent added two insurance runs in the eighth.
Belmont ripped an RBI-single that scored Hess to move the lead to 5-2, before Golkosky hit an RBI-single up the middle, scoring Belmont later in the inning as the Bearcats lead was now 6-2. Root slammed the door shut on the GT's with a quick 1-2-3 inning in the ninth to secure the game one win for Saint Vincent.
Saint Vincent's final line score was six runs on 10 hits, committing four errors, while Geneva's was two runs on eight hits, committing two errors of their own.
Game 2- Saint Vincent 11, Geneva 5
A strong offensive outing mixed with solid pitching led the Bearcats to the win in game two. The Bearcats came alive with 12 hits, capitalizing on four Geneva errors to secure the PAC sweep.
It was a game of firsts for the Bearcats in the finale of the doubleheader.
Eric Harris picked up his first collegiate win on the mound, pitching 3.1 strong innings in relief, allowing just one run on five hits, while striking out two and walking one. Offensively,
Traynor Janosko recorded his first collegiate hit and two RBI's, along with
Joseph Pugh recording his first two collegiate hits and two RBI's in the win as well.
Evan Wiewiora,
Jacob Hess, and
Alex Polito all through scoreless and hitless outings in relief for the Bearcats. Hess and Polito both picked up one strikeout each as well.
Nathan Whiteman went 2-3 with two RBI's, two runs scored, and two walks, whole
Derek Hald went 2-4 with two RBI's.
Dalton Nicklow continued his dominant day at the plate going 3-5 with one run scored.
Alex Hess added a hit and RBI, while
Kyle Belmont recorded a hit and run scored for Saint Vincent.
Just as they did in the opener, Geneva took an early 1-0 lead over the Bearcats heading into the bottom of the second. Saint Vincent answered in a big way, scoring five runs in the bottom of the second to jump back out to a 5-1 lead. SVC scored their five runs on five hits in the inning, capitalizing on one Golden Tornado error. Pugh started the rally with an RBI-single to right field, Janosko later followed with a two-RBI single to right center, scoring both Pugh and Hess to put the Bearcats up 3-1.
Hald followed with an RBI-single of his own, before
Ben Hudson hit in Janosko with an RBI-sac fly to put Saint Vincent up 5-1. The Bearcats weren't done yet as they added four more runs in the third inning to jump out to a 9-1 lead. Saint Vincent scored their four runs in the inning, capitalizing on three Geneva errors. Whiteman had a two-RBI double and Hald recorded an RBI-single for SVC in the inning.
Geneva scored three runs in the fourth to cut the lead to 9-4. From that point on, Harris came onto the mound and shut down the Geneva bats, taking the Bearcats into the later innings with a commanding lead. SVC added a run in the sixth on a Pugh RBI-single to left field, scoring Belmont and Hess added an RBI-single to centerfield, scoring Nicklow for another insurance run in the eighth to help the Bearcats secure the game two win and PAC sweep.
Saint Vincent's final line score was 11 runs on 12 hits, committing one error, while Geneva's was five runs on nine hits, committing four errors.
The Bearcats will return to action on Saturday, March 29 with another PAC doubleheader, this one on the road at Westminster. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 1 p.m. in New Wilmington, Pa. on Saturday afternoon.
