Men's lacrosse wins big in non-conference home matchup against Neumann

LATROBE, Pa. (March 8)- The Saint Vincent men's lacrosse team earned a big 18-10 non-conference victory against Neumann on a cold Saturday afternoon at UPMC Field.

The Bearcats (2-2) held a 10-6 halftime lead, before going on to outscore Neumann (2-4) by an 8-4 margin in the second half to secure their second consecutive victory.

Leading Saint Vincent was Justin Wodarek who totaled six points in the win. Wodarek scored five goals and dished out one assist for the Bearcats. Jonathan Nagy added four points on three goals and one assist, while Jacob Crumling and Liam McCall both totaled three points, scoring two goals and dishing out one assist. Carter Haid and Cam Herring added two points each, with Haid recording two assists and Herring scoring two goals.

Neal Ritchie and Colin Cooper added one goal each, while Cooper also scooped up three ground balls. Sean Fehrenbach and Tyler Harpst both scored one goal each for SVC. Isaiah Francis scooped up five ground balls and dished out one assist, while Mason Krabbe recorded a team-high seven ground balls. Colton Baker also caused two turnovers for the Saint Vincent defense.

Garrett Ritts picked up the win in net, making a strong 17 saves for the Bearcats.

Neumann scored the opening goal of the game, but from that point on, SVC controlled the first quarter. The Bearcats scored the next five goals in a row, coming from five different players to open up to a 5-1 lead. The high scoring first quarter continued as the Knights outscored SVC 3-1 over the final five minutes of the quarter, but Saint Vincent still led 6-4 going into the second quarter.

Once again, Neumann opened the scoring up in the second quarter to cut the lead to 6-5, but Saint Vincent had another answer. Saint Vincent scored the next four goals in a row, three of which came from Wodarek and one coming from Harpst to open their lead to 10-5. The Knights answered with another goal before the half, but SVC still held a four goal (10-6) lead.

It was all Saint Vincent in the second half. SVC outscored the Knights 5-2 in the third quarter. Herring scored twice in the quarter, along with Crumling, Ritchie, and Nagy to increase the SVC lead to 15-7 heading into the final quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the play still favored SVC. Saint Vincent went on to outscore the Knights 3-2 in the quarter to secure the victory. Crumling, Nagy, and McCall were SVC's goal scorers in the final quarter.

SVC outshot Neumann by a 49-44 margin. Both teams turned it over 22 times, while Saint Vincent was 23-27 on clears and Neumann was 19-25. Ground balls (28-25) and faceoffs (17-14) both favored the Bearcats, while SVC was 3-4 in man-up situations and Neumann was 0-2.

The Bearcats return to action on Wednesday, March 12 with a trip to Oberlin. The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. in Oberlin, Ohio on Wednesday.
