LATROBE, Pa. (Apr. 13)- The Saint Vincent baseball team fell in a Presidents Athletic Conference doubleheader to Washington and Jefferson on Sunday afternoon.
The Bearcats (13-16, 7-7 PAC) fell in the opener 11-6, before falling 4-3 in game two to W&J (20-5, 11-1 PAC) after a late comeback attempt.
Prior to the game Saint Vincent honored their 12 seniors on this year's team.
Game 1- W&J 11, Saint Vincent 6
The Bearcats fell behind 7-2 after three innings of play in the opener. SVC began to chip away, cutting the lead to 7-5, but a grand slam by W&J in the eighth inning allowed the Presidents to hand Saint Vincent the loss in game one.
Kyle Belmont led Saint Vincent going 2-5 with one RBI and one run scored in the opener.
Derek Hald added a hit and two RBI's, while
Ben Hudson and
Isiah Petty both recorded one hit and one RBI each.
Chuck Fontana,
Mario Disso, and
Dylan Schmude all recorded one hit each as well in the game one loss for the Bearcats.
Tyler Dancu took the loss on the mound, pitching 2.1 innings, allowing seven earned runs on seven hits, while also striking out two batters and walking three.
Josh Dailey pitched 4.2 shutout innings in relief, allowing just two hits, while striking out two batters and walking one.Â
Over the first three innings, it was all W&J. The Presidents quickly jumped out to a 7-2 lead after four first inning runs and three runs in the third, while Saint Vincent scored one in each of the second and third innings.
Hudson got the Bearcats on the board with an RBI-triple in the second inning, while Hald drove in the Bearcats second run of the game in the third inning.
The middle innings belonged to the Bearcats. SVC outscored W&J 3-0 over the next four innings to cut into the Presidents lead. SVC scored one run in the fifth on another RBI from Hald to cut the lead to 7-3. The Bearcats added two more runs in the sixth after an RBI from Petty and then Belmont scored on a throwing error by the catcher to cut the lead to 7-5.
After a scoreless seventh, W&J capitalized on three straight two out walks in the eighth, hitting a grand slam to push their lead back up to 11-5. Belmont added an RBI-double in the ninth, but it was too little too late as the Bearcats fell 11-6.
Saint Vincent scored their six runs on eight hits, committing one error, while W&J scored their 11 runs on 12 hits, committing four errors.
Game 2- W&J 4, Saint Vincent 3
It was a pitchers duel in the second game of the doubleheader. The score was 0-0 through sixth innings, before the Presidents scored two in the seventh and one in each of the eighth and ninth to take a 4-0 lead.
Kyle Belmont ripped a three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth, but the Bearcats still fell just short, 4-3.
Sean McAleer was strong on the mound for SVC, pitching 7.2 innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits, while striking out six and walking one.
Alex Polito and
Christopher Rayman both tossed scoreless outings in relief.
Alex Hess went 2-3 in the loss for SVC.
Derek Hald,
Chuck Fontana, and
Nolan Hurd all tallied one hit in the loss.
After the Bearcats cut the lead to 4-3 in the ninth after the three-run homer, W&J closed any more of an opportunity for SVC as they fell 4-3.
Saint Vincent returns to action on Tuesday, April 15 with a trip to Franciscan for another PAC doubleheader. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Steubenville, Ohio.
