STEUBENVILLE, Ohio (Apr. 16)- The Saint Vincent baseball team split a Presidents Athletic Conference twinbill at Franciscan on Wednesday afternoon.
The Bearcats (14-17, 8-8 PAC) opened up the first game with a 10-0 run-rule victory, before falling to the Barons (10-17, 5-9 PAC) 11-9 in the second game of the road doubleheader.
Game 1- Saint Vincent 10, Franciscan 0 (7 Innings)
The Bearcats scored one in the first and three in the third, before opening the game up with a six-run fifth inning. The Bearcats held the Barons over the next three innings to put the 10-run rule into effect.
Derek Hald led Saint Vincent in the opener, going 3-4 with one RBI and one run scored.
Kyle Belmont had a hit, which was a three-run homer in the game as well.
Dylan Schmude added two hits, an RBI, and a run scored.
Nathan Whiteman recorded a hit and two RBI's, while
T.J. Bucy,
Mario Disso, and
Jacob Auld all recorded one hit each.
Isiah Petty also recorded an RBI in the win.
Jeremy Kreuzwieser pitched seven dominant innings for the Bearcats on the mound. Kreuzwieser picked up the win, pitching seven scoreless, allowing just two hits, while striking out six.
Hald got the scoring started, scoring Disso with an RBI-single to put Saint Vincent up 1-0. After a scoreless second inning, the Bearcats added on in the third. Belmont smacked a three-run homer, scoring Hald and Disso to put SVC up 4-0.
The Bearcats broke it open in the fifth inning.
Nolan Hurd reached on error with two outs, scoring Disso and the Bearcats went on to take advantage of that error, scoring five more two-out runs. Scmude followed with an RBI-double and Petty then walked, allowing another run to score.
Whiteman followed with a two-RBI single and then Petty later came around to score on an error as the SVC lead was a commanding 10-0.
Kreuzwieser shut the door on the Barons the rest of the way to give the Bearcats the game one victory.
Game 2- Franciscan 11, Saint Vincent 9
Franciscan was propelled by a six-run first inning, which turned out to be the difference maker in a game where Saint Vincent trailed for the majority of the way. The Bearcats attempted a late comeback but fell short, leaving the bases loaded in the ninth.
Ben Hudson went 4-5 with three RBI's in finale of the doubleheader.
Lane Golkosky and
Dylan Schmude added two hits each for SVC.
Jacob Auld and
Kyle Belmont recorded a hit and two RBI's each, while
Alex Hess had a hit and scored two runs for the Bearcats.
Andrew Root took the loss on the mound in relief, pitching 3.2 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits, while striking out one and walking one as well.
Alex Polito threw 2.2 scoreless innings in relief, allowing one hit for the Bearcats.
Belmont got the scoring started with an RBI-sac fly in the first inning to put Saint Vincent in front, 1-0. Franciscan erupted with a six-run bottom of the first inning to quickly gain their first lead of the day at 6-1.
Saint Vincent chipped away with a run in the second, two in the third, one in the fourth, and two more in the fifth to take a 7-6 lead. In the second, Hudson recorded an RBI-groundout. Belmont and
Chuck Fontana both followed with RBI's in the third inning and Hudson scored on an error in the fourth to cut the lead to 6-5.
Hudson then gave the Bearcats a lead with a two-RBI single in the fifth to put SVC up 7-6. Franciscan answered with four in the fifth and one more in the eighth as the Bearcats found themselves trailing 11-7 heading into the final inning.
In the ninth, the Bearcats put up a fight. Auld ripped a two-RBI single to cut the lead to 11-9, however Saint Vincent stranded the bases loaded, stranding the tying run at second base as they fell in the finale.
Saint Vincent will take the next few days off, before returning to action on Tuesday, April 22 with a non-conference matchup against La Roche at home. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. in the single nine inning game.
