Baseball falls in extra innings to La Roche

LATROBE, Pa. (Apr. 22)- The Saint Vincent baseball team fell by a score of 9-8 to La Roche in extra innings on Tuesday afternoon at Bearcat Ballfield.

The Bearcats (14-18) led 4-1 after five innings, before La Roche (10-22) stormed back to tie the game and send it to extra innings. In the tenth inning, the Red Hawks scored a run and held the Bearcats in check to earn the non-conference victory.

Derek Hald recorded four hits and one RBI for the Bearcats in the loss. Dylan Schmude also recorded four hits and an RBI for SVC as well. Nathan Whiteman, Lane Golkosky, Jacob Auld, Kyle Belmont, and Ben Hudson all recorded one hit and one RBI each in the game for the Bearcats.

Andrew Stano got the start on the mound for the Bearcats picking up the no-decision. Stano pitched five innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits, while striking out four and walking one. Matthew Mroz took the loss, pitching one inning, allowing one run on one hit, while picking up a strikeout and walking one as well.

The Bearcats quickly jumped out to a 2-0 lead after a Belmont RBI-walk and Hudson RBI-sac fly. After a scoreless second and third inning, both teams added a run in the fourth, giving SVC a 3-1 lead. The Bearcats scored their run on an RBI-single from Whiteman. SVC added another run in the fifth on an RBI-single from Schmude to push their lead to 4-1.

La Roche answered in the sixth with a three-run homer to tie the game at 4-4. However, the game would not be tied for long. Saint Vincent got the lead right back scoring one run in each of the sixth and seventh innings. Hald ripped an RBI-double, while Hudson came around to score on a balk in the seventh to give SVC a 6-4 advantage.

The back-and-forth game continued as La Roche scored two in the eighth to tie it, but Saint Vincent added a run of their own on an RBI-single from Auld to give them a 7-6 lead going into the ninth. 

The long ball came back to bite the Bearcats again in the ninth as a two-run homer put La Roche up 8-7 going into the bottom of the inning. Golkosky sent the game to extras with an RBI-sac fly, scoring Schmude to tie the game at 8-8.

The Red Hawks scored in the top of the tenth and held SVC without a run in the bottom of the inning to hand the Bearcats the non-conference loss.

SVC scored their eight runs on 13 hits, committing four errors. La Roche scored their nine runs on 11 hits, committing three errors.

Saint Vincent returns to PAC play with a home doubleheader against Allegheny tomorrow, Tuesday, April 22. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Bearcat Ballfield.
