Baseball picks up important PAC sweep against Allegheny at home

LATROBE, Pa. (Apr. 23)- The Saint Vincent baseball team picked up an important Presidents Athletic Conference sweep against Allegheny in the Bearcats 2025 home finale.
 
Saint Vincent (16-18, 10-8 PAC) controlled from start to finish in game one, earning an 8-1 win. In game two, the Bearcats rallied back from a 7-1 deficit to defeat the Gators (17-15, 10-6 PAC) 8-7 in a tight game two.
 
Game 1- Saint Vincent 8, Allegheny 1
It was all Bearcats in the series opener. Saint Vincent jumped out to a commanding 6-0 lead after seven innings and never looked back as they picked up the win in game one.
 
Four Bearcats recorded at least two hits with Nathan Whiteman leading the way going 3-5 with two runs scored. Chuck Fontana and Kyle Belmont both went 2-4 with two RBIs, while Fontana also scored a run. Derek Hald added two hits, an RBI, and run scored for the Bearcats in the win as well.
 
Dylan Schmude and Isiah Petty both recorded one hit and one RBI each, while Schmude scored a run as well.
 
The Bearcats were led on the mound by a strong pitching performance from Tyler Dancu. Dancu picked up the win, pitching five shutout innings, allowing just one hit, while striking out four and walking four.
 
Sean McAleer was strong in relief for the Bearcats, pitching 3.1 innings, allowing on unearned run on four hits, while striking out one and walking two. Jacob Hess picked up the final two outs of the game for SVC on the mound.
 
With two outs in the bottom of the first inning, Fontana got the Bearcats on the board, driving in Golkosky with an RBI-single to give SVC a 1-0 lead.
 
After a scoreless second inning, the Bearcats increased their lead to 3-0 with two runs in the third inning. First, L.J. Evans drove in Golkosky with an RBI-sac fly to right and Schmude followed with an RBI-single up the middle, scoring Fontana later in the inning.
 
Saint Vincent continued to add on to their lead in the fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth, Petty ripped an RBI-single to right field scoring Schmude (4-0). SVC scored two more in the sixth after an RBI-groundout from Fontana scored Whiteman and an RBI-double from Belmont scored Golkosky as SVC held a commanding 6-0 lead going into the seventh.
 
Both teams went scoreless in the seventh, before the Gators ended the Bearcats shutout with a run in the eighth inning, cutting the lead to 6-1. However, SVC answered with two more insurance runs in the eighth.
 
Hald drilled an RBI-double down the left field line, scoring Whiteman, while Belmont hit an RBI-sac fly to right field scoring Hald later in the inning to give SVC an 8-1 lead.
 
In the ninth, Hess came in to relieve McAleer who allowed a couple of baserunners in the inning. The senior reliever slammed the door shut, picking up the final two outs to secure the victor in game one for SVC.
 
Saint Vincent scored their eight runs on 11 hits, committing three errors, while Allegheny scored their lone run on five hits, committing two errors.
 
Game 2- Saint Vincent 8, Allegheny 7
Saint Vincent rallied from a 7-1 deficit after four and a half innings, scoring three runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings, while adding what turned out to be the winning run in the eighth on a wild pitch to secure the 8-7 victory and PAC sweep.
 
Alex Polito picked up the win on the mound after 2.1 scoreless innings in relief for SVC. The senior did not allow a hit in his outing, while he struck out two Gator hitters as well. Garrett Knapp was strong in relief for Saint Vincent as well, also pitching 2.1 scoreless innings he relief. Knapp also did not allow a hit, while he struck out two and walked two as well.
 
Jeremy Kreuzwieser picked up the no-decision, pitching 3.1 innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on four hits, while striking out four and walking one.
 
The Bearcats totaled eight hits in the win as a team, coming from eight different players. Lane Golkosky, Chuck Fontana, and Brennen Freiwald all recorded one hit and one RBI each.
 
Dylan Schmude recorded a hit, and two runs scored, while Kyle Belmont also had a hit and scored one run. Traynor Janosko, L.J. Evans, and Isiah Petty all totaled one hit each for SVC as well.
 
It was all Allegheny in the first four and a half innings of the game. The Gators jumped out to a 4-0 lead and increased that lead to 7-1 after the top of the fifth.
 
SVC began their comeback with a three-run bottom of the fifth. First, Whiteman recorded an RBI-walk with the bases loaded, scoring Janosko. Later in the inning, Petty came around to score on a wild pitch, and Golkosky followed with an RBI-sac fly, scoring Alex Hess to cut the Gators lead to 7-4.
 
After a scoreless top half of the sixth for Allegheny, SVC tied it in the bottom of the inning. Fontana led off the inning with a solo shot to center, cutting the lead to 7-5. Petty then grounded into a double play, but Belmont came around to score and Freiwald tied the game with an RBI-single to left field, scoring Schmude.
 
Both bullpens pitched a scoreless seventh inning, followed by a scoreless inning from Polito in the eighth.
 
In the bottom of the eighth with two outs, Schmude came in to score on a wild pitch to give Saint Vincent an 8-7 lead heading into the ninth. Polito closed the game out, setting the Gators down in order in the ninth to secure the sweep for SVC and continue their PAC playoff push.
 
Saint Vincent scored their eight runs on eight hits, committing six errors. Allegheny on the other hand scored their seven runs on eight hits as well.
 
The Bearcats will now step outside of PAC play, traveling to take on Juniata in SVC's final non-conference doubleheader of the season on Sunday, April 27. First pitch for the non-conference doubleheader is scheduled for 12 noon on Sunday in Huntingdon, Pa.
