PITTSBURGH, Pa. (Apr. 5)- The Saint Vincent baseball team split a Presidents Athletic Conference doubleheader at Chatham on Saturday afternoon.
Saint Vincent (11-14, 5-5 PAC) fell in the opener of the doubleheader 3-1 in a pitchers duel, before downing the Cougars (12-14, 4-6 PAC) 5-4 in the finale of the doubleheader.
Game 1- Chatham 3, Saint Vincent 1
The Bearcats were held to just five hits and scored just one run in a pitchers duel in the first game of the PAC doubleheader.Â
Jeremy Kreuzwieser took the loss on the mound for the Bearcats, pitching 5.1 innings, allowing three earned runs on four hits, while striking out three batters and walking two.
Jacob Hess and
Andrew Root both tossed 1.1 scoreless innings in relief each for Saint Vincent.
Kyle Belmont recorded two of SVC's five hits, going 2-4 with one RBI.
Alex Hess,
Isiah Petty, and
Dalton Nicklow all went 1-4, while Nicklow scored one run for Saint Vincent.
Chatham quickly jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one inning and that's all they would need as both pitching staffs kept the offenses in control. Belmont scored Nicklow on an RBI-single in the sixth, cutting the lead to 2-1, but the Cougars added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to increase their lead to 3-1.Â
Neither team was able to produce a run the rest of the game as the Cougars downed the Bearcats in the opener.
Game 2- Saint Vincent 5, Chatham 4
SVC jumped out to a 2-1 lead, before the Cougars came back to take a 4-2 advantage. Saint Vincent scored three ninth inning runs to earn the PAC split. A
Dylan Schmude RBI-single in the ninth turned out to be the game-winning run for the Bearcats.
Jacob Auld led the Bearcats going 2-3 with one RBI.
Nathan Whiteman and
Mario Disso both added a hit and run scored. Schmude recorded a hit and the game-winning RBI, while
Isiah Petty,
T.J. Bucy,
Kyle Belmont, and
Chuck Fontana all recorded one hit each.Â
Tyler Dancu picked up the win on the mound for SVC. Dancu pitched six innings, allowing two runs on six hits, while striking out six and walked two.
Alex Polito picked up the save on the mound, pitching two shutout innings, while picking up one strikeout.
Fontana got the Saint Vincent offense going with a two-RBI single, scoring Disso and Whiteman to put the Bearcats up 2-0 in the fourth inning. Chatham added a run in the bottom of the inning to cut the SVC lead to 2-1. The Cougars added another run in the sixth and two more in the seventh to jump ahead of Saint Vincent by a score of 4-2.
The Bearcats rallied in the ninth. Auld ripped an RBI-double, scoring
Derek Hald to cut the lead to 4-3.
Alex Hess tied the game with an RBI-sac fly, scoring
Ryan Tierney, and Schmude followed with what turned out to be the game-winning RBI-single, scoring
Brennen Freiwald to put Saint Vincent up 5-4.
Polito shut the door on the Cougars in the ninth to secure the win for the Bearcats.
Saint Vincent returns to action on Wednesday, April 9 with a home PAC doubleheader against Waynesburg. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon at Bearcat Ballfield.
