Baseball sweeps Waynesburg at home

LATROBE, Pa. (Apr. 9)- The Saint Vincent baseball team picked up a home doubleheader Presidents Athletic Conference sweep against Waynesburg on Wednesday afternoon at Bearcat Ballfield.

The Bearcats (13-14, 7-5 PAC) picked up a 7-5 win in game one after a strong pitching outing from Jeremy Kreuzwieser. Saint Vincent followed that up with a 6-4 win in game two against the Yellow Jackets to complete the conference sweep.

Game 1- Saint Vincent 7, Waynesburg 5
Saint Vincent was led by a strong pitching performance from Jeremy Kreuzwieser in the opening game of the day.

The SVC offense had a good day at the plate, tagging Geneva with 7 runs on 11 hits. Kreuzwiser pitched six strong innings on the mound for the Bearcats, allowing three earned runs on seven hits, while fanning five Waynesburg batters, and walking three batters.

The Bearcat bullpen consisted of Andrew Root, Alex Polito, and Evan Wiewiora combined to allow two runs on two hits, in their three innings of work to close out the win for SVC.

Derek Hald led the way on offense for Saint Vincent, going 3-4 with two RBIs and a walk as well. Kyle Belmont added two hits, RBI and a run scored for the Bearcats in the win as well. Alex Hess also had two hits, and a run scored. While Dylan Schmude, Mario Disso, Isiah Petty, and Traynor Janosko all recorded one hit each for SVC.

Waynesburg capitalized on a free pass by Kreuzwieser in the first inning to bring around the first run of the game and take a 1-0 lead.

That 1-0 advantage would grow to a 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the second inning.

Belmont got the Bearcats on the board by stealing home on a wild pitch by the Waynesburg pitcher. Petty followed with a single to right field, scoring Schmude to tie the game at 2-2. SVC captured the lead in the bottom of the third inning and never looked back, as Chuck Fontana started the scoring by sacrificing in Disso on a flyout, and Belmont doubled home Hald to give the Bearcats a 4-2 lead.

The offense started to stall for both teams as SVC was holding on to a 4-3 lead. The deficit for Waynesburg grew back to two runs after Hald singled in the bottom of the seventh inning scoring Ryan Tierney.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Bearcats added two insurance runs. Polito tried to get the 2 innings to hold for the Bearcats after sitting the Yellow Jackets down 1-2-3 in the 8th. However, the 9th got off to a shaky start as free paths started to occur.

SVC turned to Wiewiora in a big spot, and he delivered to get his first save of the year.

Saint Vincent's final line score was seven runs on 11 hits, committing one error, while Waynesburg had five runs on nine hits, committing two errors of their own.

 Game 2 – Saint Vincent 6, Waynesburg 4

A strong offensive outing mixed with solid pitching led the Bearcats to the win in game two. The Bearcats came alive with nine hits, capitalizing on two Waynesburg errors to secure the PAC sweep.

Andrew Stano got hit around for SVC as he gave up six hits on 3 runs (2 earned runs) in two innings for him. Eric Harris bridged the gap, going five innings allowing three hits and 1 run, and struck out 5 Yellow Jacket batters. Tyler Dancu got a five-out save to close the door in the ballgame.

Ben Hudson went 3-4 with two runs scored, and a stolen base, while Dylan Schmude continued his dominant day by going 2-3 with two RBIs, and two BBs.

Dalton Nicklow and Alex Hess had a nice day recording one hit, as Hess drove in a run, and Nicklow scored a run.

Just as they did in the opener, Waynesburg took a lead on Saint Vincent 3-0 going into the bottom of the second inning. Nicklow got the Bearcats on the board via a passed ball, as Belmont reached first on the strikeout.

In the next inning, the Bearcats had timely hits as they scored three runs on two hits and scored from a Waynesburg error to give the Bearcats a lead and they never looked back. Schmude followed up with a two-run RBI single to add to Saint Vincent's lead. Scoring Hudson, and Petty to make the score 6-3.

Waynesburg added a run in the 7th to make the game 6-4. After that, Dancu came in relieving for Christopher Rayman who only got one out of the three batters he faced and got a five-out save.

Saint Vincent's final line score was six runs on nine hits, committing two errors, while Waynesburg had four runs on 11 hits, committing two errors.
