Five Bearcats earn CSC Academic All-District honors in baseball

GREENWOOD, Ind. (June 4)- Five Saint Vincent baseball players were named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team, announced by the CSC yesterday afternoon.

Graduate seniors Tyler Dancu, Dalton Nicklow, Alex Hess, and Andrew Root, along with senior Derek Hald all earned the academic honor for the Bearcats.

To be considered for CSC Academic All-District, nominees must be at least a sophomore academically and athletically. Undergraduates must have a 3.5 cumulative grade point average (4.0 scale). Student-athletes must compete in 90 percent of the institution's games or started at least 66 percent of those contests. Pitchers are required to have made at least 17 appearances or pitched 35 innings.

Dancu (Irwin, Pa./Hempfield) went 3-4 on the mound for SVC during his graduate season. He struck out 47 batters over the course of his final season for Saint Vincent. Dancu tossed a complete game shutout allowing just seven hits, while striking out three in a big non-conference win against The Apprentice School for Saint Vincent on March 15. He later tossed the best game of his Saint Vincent career in an elimination game for Saint Vincent against Westminster in the semi-finals of te PAC Campionship Tournament. Dancu tossed 8.2 innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits, while striking out five Titans and walking one. He was named to the PAC Sportsmanship Team a couple of weeks ago.

Nicklow (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) was one of the Bearcats top hitters at the plate this season. He hit .347 with one home run, nine RBI's, and a team-high 13 doubles for Saint Vincent. Nicklow totaled three, three-hit games over the course of the season, including picking up the 100th hit of his three-year Bearcat career.

Hess (Mount Airy, Md./South Carroll) started in 40 of the Bearcats 41 games over the course of the season. He hit .240 with 17 RBI's for SVC in those 40 games. He also drew 19 walks and was hit by eight pitches. Hess totaled a .916 fielding percentage over the course of the season, while he recorded two or more hits in six different games, including three hits in a game against North Central (Minn.) on March 5.

Root (New Cumberland, Pa./Trinity) was one of the Bearcats top options out of the bullpen during his graduate season. The graduate appeared in 19 games out of the pen, pitching 31 innings over the course of those outings. He totaled a 3.77 ERA, striking out 22 batters, while walking just six. In six of his outings, he tossed scoreless innings for te Bearcats.

Hald (Apollo, Pa./Kiski Area) played in 40 games for Saint Vincent with 39 starts during his senior season. The senior catcher led Saint Vincent with 47 hits, which included eight doubles, while he also drove in 24 runs. Hald accumulated a .315 batting average, while he threw out 24 runners attempting to steal during the year as well. Hald totaled an impressive .978 fielding percentage for SVC. He was named Second Team All-PAC by the conference just a couple of weeks ago.
