LATROBE, Pa. (Sept. 17)- The Saint Vincent women's soccer team earned a 3-0 sweep against Franciscan in their Presidents Athletic Conference Opener on Wednesday night in the Carey Center.
The Bearcats (2-4, 1-0 PAC) cruised to 25-19 and 25-16 wins in the first two sets, before coming back to win the third set by a score of 25-23 to down the Barons (2-5, 0-1 PAC).
Meegan Williams led Saint Vincent with a 15-kill, 10-dig double-double.
Dakota Hershberger recorded an impressive double-double as well with 13 kills and 16 digs for Saint Vincent.Â
Lauren Fox added nine kills, while
Brenna McCracken recorded 18 digs to lead Saint Vincent.
Madie Eagler totaled 20 assist and
Sani Jones added 15 assists of her own, while
Vivian Wirth led the match with three blocks.
Franciscan quickly jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the opening set. However, Saint Vincent stormed back with a 16-6 run to take a 16-10 lead. SVC continued to add on as they increased their lead to 23-15. The Barons scored four in a row to cut the lead to 23-19, but Saint Vincent answered with back-to-back kills from Williams to win the opening set (25-19) and take a 1-0 lead in the match.
It was all Saint Vincent in the second set. The Bearcats jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the set and never looked back. Franciscan cut the lead to 15-13, but Saint Vincent answered with a quick 4-0 run. The Bearcats went on to score five of the final six points in the set, once again ending the set with back-to-back Williams kills to win the set (25-16) and take a commanding 2-0 lead overall in the match.
In the third set, Saint Vincent looked to be in full control as they held a 20-14 lead. However, the Barons had one last push in them, scoring seven in a row and SVC found themselves trailing 21-20. After trading the next four points, Saint Vincent scored the final three points in the set on a kill from Williams and back-to-back Franciscan attack errors to win the set (25-23) and the match 3-0.
The Bearcats led in every major statistical category in the match. Kills were 43-27, blocks were 7-5, assists were 39-26, and digs were 67-60 all in favor of the Bearcats. As a team, Saint Vincent recorded a hitting percentage of .150.
Saint Vincent returns to action on Saturday, September 20 with a trip to Chatham for another PAC matchup. The match is scheduled to begin at 12 noon on Saturday afternoon in Pittsburgh.
