LATROBE, Pa. (Jan. 17) – The Saint Vincent men's basketball team used a balanced scoring attack and smothering defense to earn an 85-59 Presidents' Athletic Conference win over Allegheny College Saturday evening at the Robert S. Carey Center.
The Bearcats improve to 8-7 overall and 3-3 in PAC play, while the Gators fall to 5-10 and 3-3 in league action.
Saint Vincent took control from the opening tip, shooting 51.9 percent from the floor and asserting its will on both ends of the court. The Bearcats connected on 8-of-19 from three-point range and went 19-of-26 at the free-throw line, helping build a commanding cushion that grew throughout the night.
Saint Vincent also dominated the paint and the transition game, outscoring Allegheny in fast-break opportunities and converting turnovers into easy buckets.
Offensively,
Jaden Gales led the Bearcats with 23 points, going 8-of-15 from the field and 7-of-10 at the charity stripe.
Jaden Payne scored 11 points, while
Mike Iuzzolino added 11 and
Terek Crosby chipped in 12 — including timely three-point shooting that kept the Bearcats rolling.
Dev Ostrowski contributed eight points, and several others offered valuable support off the bench as Saint Vincent's depth was on full display.
Defensively, the Bearcats held Allegheny to 35.8 percent shooting, including 5-of-17 from beyond the arc, while forcing 15 turnovers and limiting second-chance opportunities. Allegheny was led by Pijus Latauskas with 14 points and Ryan Lang with 13, but the Gators were unable to sustain offensive consistency against Saint Vincent's length and activity.
Saint Vincent's energy never waned as the Bearcats built the lead — opening up advantage in the first half and outscoring Allegheny 47-37 in the second stanza to close out the decisive victory.
The Bearcats return to action on Wednesday, January 21 with a road matchup at W&J. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in Washington.
