LATROBE, Pa. (Feb. 11) – The Saint Vincent women's basketball team won a back-and-forth Presidents' Athletic Conference showdown in dramatic fashion Wednesday evening, edging Washington & Jefferson 77-74 in overtime at the Robert S. Carey Center.
With the victory, the Bearcats improved to 16-6 overall and 11-2 in PAC play, while the Presidents moved to 16-6 overall and 11-2 in conference action.
The game was tightly contested from the opening tip, featuring 16 lead changes and 11 ties, with neither team able to create much separation through regulation.
W&J held a slim 37-35 halftime edge, and the teams remained locked in late as the Presidents led 66-64 after three quarters before Saint Vincent answered in the fourth.
Saint Vincent's offense was paced by
Brooke Evans, who turned in a huge night with 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting, while also grabbing 12 rebounds for a double-double.
Danielle Pontius added 15 points and dished out one assist, and
Camdon Bashor chipped in 14 points on efficient shooting.
Makenna Maier also scored 14, knocking down two three-pointers and pulling down six boards, while
Olivia Yancy added nine points and three assists.
The Presidents were led by Katie Kovalchick's game-high 30 points, with Riley DeRubbo adding 18 points and 10 rebounds. W&J finished 18-of-22 at the free-throw line, but Saint Vincent stayed composed in the extra session, outscoring the Presidents 11-8 in overtime to secure the win.
In addition to the big individual performances, Saint Vincent won key hustle areas, finishing with 17 second-chance points and holding W&J to 4-of-18 from three-point range.The Bearcats also made the most of their opportunities at the foul line, going 17-of-24 in the win.
The Bearcats return to action on Saturday, February 14 with a home PAC matchup against Hiram on senior day. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. with senior day festivities to take place prior to the game.
