NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (Mar. 14) — The Saint Vincent baseball team was swept in their final doubleheader against the Apprentice School on Saturday afternoon.
The Bearcats fell 5-0 in the opener before losing the series finale by a score of 10-5.
Game 1- Apprentice School 5, Saint Vincent 0
The Saint Vincent College baseball team was shut out by the Apprentice School, 5-0, in the opener of the doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at War Memorial Stadium.
The Builders scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning and added two more in the second to take control early.
Apprentice opened the scoring in the first after Nate Yeary singled and stole second before Jaeden Anderson and Seth Harrison each recorded singles to load the bases.
Isaac McCallister then drew an RBI walk, Landon Turner followed with another bases-loaded walk, and Jett Winslow was hit by a pitch with the bases full to give the Builders a 3-0 lead.
The Builders added two more runs in the second inning. Yeary again started the rally with a single and later scored on an RBI single by McCallister. Anderson then came home on a sacrifice fly from Turner, extending the Apprentice advantage to 5-0.
Saint Vincent was limited to four hits in the game, getting singles from
Dylan Schmude,
Traynor Janosko,
Isiah Petty, and
Austen Hester. Hester also drew the Bearcats' lone walk, while Schmude and
Reid Rachwal were each hit by a pitch.
The Bearcats had their best early chance in the second, when Petty singled and Hester walked, but Apprentice turned a double play to end the threat.
Saint Vincent also put runners aboard in the third, fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh innings, but could not break through against Apprentice starter Charley Higginbotham, who tossed a complete-game shutout, allowing four hits while striking out three.
On the mound,
Braden Trainor was charged with the loss for Saint Vincent.
Jack Reichart provided four innings of relief and allowed two runs while striking out one, while
Gavin Switzer,
Anthony DeMarco, and
Troy Gilpin combined for two scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
With the loss, Saint Vincent moved to 4-9 on the season, while Apprentice improved to 13-2.
Game 2- Apprentice School 10, Saint Vincent 5
The Saint Vincent College baseball team dropped a 10-5 decision to the Apprentice School on Saturday afternoon in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader at War Memorial Stadium.
Saint Vincent jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but the Builders went on to outscore them 10-3 the rest of the way to hand SVC the loss.
The Bearcats struck first with a two-out rally in the top of the opening inning.
Nolan Hurd singled,
Jacob Auld followed with a base hit, and
Jack Murphy lined an RBI single up the middle to plate Hurd. One batter later,
Isiah Petty singled to left to bring home Auld and give Saint Vincent an early 2-0 lead.
Apprentice responded immediately in the bottom half of the inning. Nate Yeary walked and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Seth Harrison before Jett Winslow delivered a two-run single to right center, scoring Jaeden Anderson and Landon Turner to put the Builders in front, 3-2.
Saint Vincent evened the score in the second without recording a hit.
Ben Hudson reached on an error, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by
Carlos Rubio, and scored on a
Dylan Schmude groundout to make it 3-3.
Apprentice answered again in the bottom of the frame, using sacrifice flies from Yeary and Anderson to regain the lead at 5-3.
The Builders broke the game open in the third. Winslow walked, Drew Barbosa was hit by a pitch, and Jackson Thomas drew a walk to load the bases before Baker Green reached on a fielder's choice that brought in a run.
Yeary, Anderson, and Harrison then each drew RBI walks as Apprentice plated four runs in the inning to stretch the margin to 9-3. Apprentice added one more run in the fourth on a Barbosa groundout that scored Turner, making it 10-3.
The Bearcats got two runs back in the sixth. Petty opened the inning with a single, Hudson was hit by a pitch, and
Brayden Macaluso was also hit by a pitch to load the bases. Schmude then drew an RBI walk, and
Lane Golkosky followed with an RBI single through the left side to cap the scoring at 10-5.
Auld and Petty each recorded two hits to lead the Saint Vincent offense, while Murphy, Petty, Golkosky, and Schmude accounted for the Bearcats' five RBIs. Hudson scored twice as Saint Vincent finished with five runs on seven hits.
On the mound,
Andrew Bell was charged with the loss for Saint Vincent.
Gavin Roebuck turned in two scoreless innings of relief, allowing no hits and striking out two. Aidan Walker earned the win for Apprentice after allowing three runs, two earned, over four innings.
Saint Vincent returns to action on Tuesday, March 17 with a non-conference matchup at Pitt-Greensburg. The single nine inning game is scheduled for a 4 p.m. first pitch on Tuesday in Greensburg.
