Bearcats split opening PAC doubleheader at Bethany

BETHANY, W.V. (Mar. 21)- The Saint Vincent College baseball team split their opening Presidents Athletic Conference doubleheader of the season at Bethany on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Bearcats won the opener 4-0 after a strong performance from freshman pitcher Jason Forgey. SVC lost game two by a score of 15-3.
 
Game 1- Saint Vincent 4, Bethany 0
The Saint Vincent College baseball team opened Presidents' Athletic Conference play with a strong all-around effort on Saturday afternoon, shutting out Bethany College, 4-0, at Bethany Park.
 
After four scoreless innings, the Bearcats broke through in the top of the fifth. Ben Hudson reached on an error, moved into scoring position with a stolen base and advanced to third on a groundout before coming home on another Bethany miscue off the bat of Dylan Schmude, giving Saint Vincent a 1-0 lead.
 
Saint Vincent added some breathing room in the seventh inning. Traynor Janosko opened the frame with a single and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Lane Golkosky.
 
 After Hudson reached and stole second, Schmude drew a walk before Nolan Hurd delivered the big hit of the afternoon, singling to left and advancing to second on an error as both Hudson and Schmude came around to score, extending the Bearcat advantage to 4-0.
 
Hurd paced the Bearcat offense by going 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Schmude went 1-for-4 with a walk and scored a run. Janosko scored once and added a hit, Hudson crossed the plate twice, and Isiah Petty chipped in a double as Saint Vincent totaled five hits in the victory.
 
Golkosky also recorded an RBI on his seventh-inning sacrifice fly.
On the mound, Jason Forgey was outstanding in the start, earning the win after tossing seven scoreless innings. He allowed just three hits, walked four and struck out six over 105 pitches. Garrett Knapp handled the final two innings in relief, surrendering only two hits to preserve the shutout. Bethany stranded 10 runners in the loss.
 
Game 2- Bethany 15, Saint Vincent 3 (8 Innings)
The Saint Vincent College baseball team dropped game two of its Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader at Bethany on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Bison by a 15-3 score in eight innings at Bethany Park.
 
Bethany struck first in the opening inning, taking advantage of an early Bearcat error before stringing together a sacrifice fly from Gian DeGenova and an RBI single by Marco Gonzalez to move in front 2-0.
 
The Bison added three more runs in the second, getting an RBI single from Sonny Peluchette and a two-run double off the bat of DeGenova to build a 5-0 advantage.
 
The Bearcats answered in the top of the fourth inning. Lane Golkosky came around to score on an RBI single from Jacob Auld, and Chuck Fontana later crossed the plate on an Isiah Petty single up the middle to trim the deficit to 5-2.
 
Bethany added to its lead in the fifth, drawing an RBI walk from Niko Heidt to make it 6-2, before a three-run sixth inning pushed the margin to 9-2. In that frame, Gonzalez delivered a two-run single down the left field line and Brance McCune added an RBI on a groundout.
 
 Saint Vincent got one run back in the seventh when Traynor Janosko scored on a Dylan Schmude RBI single, but the Bison answered with a sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the inning to make it 10-3.
 
Bethany then broke the game open in the eighth, plating five runs on a two-run single by Payton Davis and a three-run double from DeGenova to secure the 15-3 victory.
Schmude, Auld and Petty each drove in a run for Saint Vincent, while Fontana, Janosko and Golkosky each scored once. Janosko, Fontana, Auld, Petty, Schmude and Armani LoRusso all recorded hits for the Bearcats.
 
As a team, Saint Vincent finished with six hits, while Bethany totaled 16 hits and nine walks. DeGenova paced the Bison offense with six RBIs, while Gonzalez added three and Davis drove in two.
 
On the mound, Nolan Hurd took the loss after allowing five runs, four earned, over the first two innings. Jack Reichart worked 2.1 innings in relief and struck out three.
 
Saint Vincent returns to action on Tuesday, March 24 with a road PAC doubleheader at Geneva. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. in game one.
