Baseball splits doubleheader at Geneva

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. (March 25) — The Saint Vincent baseball team split a doubleheader at Geneva on Wednesday afternoon.

The Bearcats lost the opener 5-4, before winning the second game 9-8 in 11 innings.

Game 1- Geneva 5, Saint Vincent 4
The Saint Vincent College baseball team mounted a late push in the ninth inning, but came up just short in a 5-4 loss to Geneva College in Presidents' Athletic Conference action Wednesday afternoon in Beaver falls.

Geneva struck first with a three-run opening inning, using RBI singles from Kirk Bearjar, Hank Fedullo and CJ Jackson to take an early 3-0 lead.

The Golden Tornadoes added two more runs in the third, getting an RBI single from Jackson and taking advantage of a Bearcat error to stretch the margin to 5-0.

Saint Vincent got on the board in the sixth inning when Dylan Schmude came home on an AJ McLafferty sacrifice fly to left, trimming the deficit to 5-1.

The Bearcats then made things interesting in the ninth. Traynor Janosko scored on a Geneva error, before McLafferty lined a two-run single to left to plate Austen Hester and Schmude and pull Saint Vincent within one at 5-4. Geneva, however, was able to close the door from there and secure the win.

McLafferty paced the Bearcats offensively with three RBIs, while Isiah Petty finished 2-for-4 with a double and a stolen base.

Janosko added a hit, a walk and a run scored, Hester came off the bench to score once, and Lane Golkosky also recorded a hit in the loss. Saint Vincent totaled six hits in the game.

On the mound, Nolan Hurd took the loss after allowing five runs, four earned, on 10 hits over 6.0 innings while striking out one. Gavin Roebuck worked a third of an inning in relief, and Connor Soska provided 1.2 scoreless innings to keep the Bearcats within striking distance late.

Geneva starter Jason Triscila earned the win after throwing 7.0 innings and allowing just one unearned run while striking out seven. Kaden Peeples picked up the save despite Saint Vincent's three-run ninth-inning rally.

Game 2- Saint Vincent 9, Geneva 8 (11 Innings)
The Saint Vincent College baseball team earned a split of Wednesday's Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader, edging Geneva College 9-8 in 11 innings in Game Two.

Saint Vincent improved to 6-12 overall and 2-2 in PAC play with the victory, while Geneva fell to 9-7 overall and 1-3 in conference action.

The Bearcats jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Dylan Schmude opened the game with a double and later scored on a Chuck Fontana RBI groundout.

Lane Golkosky then came home on an Austen Hester RBI single, before Hester scored on an Isiah Petty RBI single to cap the frame. Saint Vincent added another run in the second, when AJ McLafferty scored on a Schmude RBI groundout to make it 4-0.

Geneva got on the board in the fifth on a Michael Twigg sacrifice fly, then used a four-run sixth inning to take its first lead of the game, 5-4. Mason Smith delivered an RBI single in the inning, Noah Michal brought in a run on a fielder's choice, and Simon Wehr lined a two-run single down the right field line to put the Golden Tornadoes in front.

Saint Vincent answered in the eighth, tying the game at 5-5 when Jacob Auld scored on Petty's RBI single to center. The Bearcats then pushed back in front in the 10th inning, as Auld scored on an AJ McLafferty fielder's choice, Reid Rachwal came home on a Brooklyn Hicks bunt single, and Schmude doubled down the right field line to score McLafferty for an 8-5 advantage.

Geneva refused to go away, scoring three times in the bottom of the 10th. Colin McCrone doubled home a run, and two more Golden Tornadoes crossed on an error to even the score at 8-8. In the 11th, however, Saint Vincent plated the decisive run, as Ryan Finniff singled to shortstop to drive in Nolan Hurd with what proved to be the game-winner.

Schmude led the Bearcats offensively, going 3-for-5 with a double, two RBIs, and a run scored. Petty also finished with three hits and two RBIs, while McLafferty scored twice and drove in one. Hester added a hit, an RBI, and a run scored, and Finniff delivered the go-ahead RBI in the 11th. Saint Vincent totaled 14 hits in the win.

On the mound, Andrew Bell started and worked the first 5.0 innings, allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits while striking out three.

Jack Reichart and Garrett Knapp combined for 2.1 scoreless innings of relief before Jacob Auld covered the 10th and part of the 11th. Evan Wiewiora earned the win after recording the final out of the 10th, and Gavin Roebuck picked up the save by working a scoreless 11th inning.

Geneva starter Ryan Conover took a no-decision after allowing four runs over 6.0 innings. Ethan Blair surrendered three runs, two earned, in relief, while Jake Buyajian was charged with the loss after allowing two runs, one earned, over the final 2.0 innings.

The Bearcats will return to action on Saturday, March 28, when they host Westminster in a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader at Bearcat Ballfield. First pitch in game one is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday.
