WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (Mar. 2)- The Saint Vincent College baseball team split their season opening doubleheader against the University of Dubuque on Sunday afternoon in Florida.
The Bearcats won the season opener by a score of 4-1, before falling 12-2 in the finale of the doubleheader.
Game 1- Saint Vincent 4, Dubuque 1
It was a pitchers duel in the season opener as the teams combined for just six hits.Â
Nolan Hurd was dominant on the mound for SVC, pitching a complete game, while allowing just one earned run on hits. He also struck out two batters in his victory on the bump.
The score was tied 1-1 through four and a half innings of play. The Bearcats erupted for three runs in the fifth inning and Hurd shut the Spartans down the rest of the way to secure the win for SVC.
Dylan Schmude and
Ben Hudson had the lone two hits for Saint Vincent. Hudson also scored two runs, while
Brennen Freiwald and
Traynor Janosko scored the other two Bearcats runs.Â
Ryan Tierney tallied two RBI's to lead Saint Vincent, while
Lane Golkosky and
Chuck Fontana both drove in runs in the victory for the Bearcats as well.
Game 2- Dubuque 12, Saint Vincent 2
In the second game of the doubleheader, it was all Spartans. Dubuque struck for four runs in each of the first and second innings to quickly jump out to an 8-0 lead and the Bearcats weren't able to recover.
AJ McLafferty led the Bearcats with two hits and an RBI in his first career start.
Isiah Petty, Jacky Murphy,
Evan McGee, and
Armani LoRusso all added a hit each as well.
Garrett Knapp,
Gavin Roebuck, and
Anderson Ford all tossed scoreless innings for SVC.
The Bearcats return to action tomorrow, Monday, March 2 with a matchup against Concordia College (Minn.). First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. in Davenport, Florida.
