The Bearcats recovered from an early 14-0 deficit to record a 21-14 victory on the road against Presidents' Athletic Conference rival Westminster College.
Mike Kale rushed for a modern-day record 157 yards and threw for a touchdown to lead the offense.
Westminster scored on a six-play drive midway through the first quarter on a 30-yard pass from Shawn Lehocky to Nick Sorice. Late in the first the pair connected again, this time from 10 yards out, to make the score 14-0.
Saint Vincent, with
Jake Smith starting at quarterback in place of the injured
Aaron Smetanka, utilized the ground game to get on the board in the second. After five straight runs by Kale took the ball to the Westminster 29, the Bearcats went deep into the playbook. Smith handed off to Kale, who threw a halfback option pass to a wide open
Sheldon Loughner in the end zone, making the score 14-6.
Later in the second, linebacker
Alex Rowan forced a fumble inside the red zone, and
Quillian Reid recovered for SVC at the Titans 17. Four plays later, Smith scored on a quarterback keeper from one yard out to make it 14-12. Smith then passed to
Tom Quirin for the two-point conversion to tie the game with 2:35 left in the half.
On their next drive, Westminster threatened to take back the lead, but Reid intercepted Lehocky in the end zone, and the teams went into the break tied.
Midway through the third, the defense came up with a big play, as
Josh Diamond intercepted Lechocky at the Bearcat 22, and returned it 66 yards to the Westminster 12-yard line.
Two plays later, Smith connected with Loughner in the end zone for the go-ahead touchdown.
Kyle Thompson, playing for the first time since joining the team following the conclusion of the Bearcat soccer season, added the extra point to make the score 21-14.
The Bearcat defense kept the Titans off the board the rest of the way, as SVC held on for the victory.
