Thanks to a stellar effort from its defense, the Saint Vincent men's soccer team battled Skidmore College to a 0-0, double-overtime tie in Saratoga Springs, NY.
The host Thoroughbreds owned a 28-4 advantage in shots, but the Bearcat defense stood its ground for the entire 110 minute affair.
Goalie
Jake Gilbertson picked up the hard-earned shutout, making 11 saves.
"We battled," said Bearcat head coach
Keith Harmon. "Our defense was phenomenal. Our entire back line,
Dean Jordan,
Ben Skvarca,
Aaron Wilkinson, and
Christian Ricci, was strong. And Jake made a bunch of really big saves.
"I'm really proud of our guys."
The Thoroughbreds out-shot SVC 11-1 in each of the first two halves, with Gilbertson making eight saves in regulation to send the game into the extra session.
Gilbertson made three more stops in the first 10-minute overtime, and the Bearcats looked to seize the momentum as time wound down. With less than a minute left, SVC was granted a corner kick, but with 17 seconds left,
Clemente Mejia was stopped on the doorstep, and the game went into a second overtime.
The majority of the second extra session was played around midfield, with the only shot of the second overtime being a wide effort from the Thoroughbreds midway through.
The tie snapped SVC's four-game losing streak to being the season, and the team sees its record move to 0-4-1. Skidmore remains unbeaten, as they have a record of 3-0-1.
The Bearcats return to action tomorrow afternoon in the second game of the Skidmore Tournament, taking on Rochester Institute of Technology.
