Bearcats blanked by R.I.T.

The Bearcats were defeated 4-0 by Rochester Institute of Technology in the second day of the Skidmore College Invitational Tournament in Saratoga Springs, NY. Saint Vincent's offense failed to muster any offense on the day, as the Bearcats were held without a shot. The Bearcat defense , without the services of senior sweeper Ben Skvarca, surrendered 40 shots to RIT, Junior goalie Jake Gilbertson was exceptional in the net despite the defeat, as he made a career-high 20 saves, the fourth highest single-game total in program history. R.I.T. got on the board in the game's 30th minute, on a rebound goal from Justin Dambra. The game remained 1-0 after 45 minutes of play. The score became 2-0 10 minutes into the second half, on a goal from RITs John Rosebrooke, before they put it away with two goals 20 seconds apart in the game's 88th minute. "We were able to keep it 1-0 at halftime," said SVC head coach Keith Harmon, "but we just broke down in the second half. Without Ben in the back, we had to switch a lot of things around, and that hurt us." The Bearcats took the field just 14 hours after a marathon double-overtime tie the previous night, and the coach felt that the short turnaround may have hampered his team's efforts. "We're too young a team to play a schedule like that," Harmon said. "It's always tough playing two games back-to-back, especially after how last night went. We played hard, I can't fault the effort one bit. They were just in our end the whole time, and we couldn't do anything on offense. We have a lot of work to do as a coaching staff." Saint Vincent (0-4-1) will return to action on Tuesday, traveling to Meadville, PA to take on Allegheny College in a 7pm match.
