The Lady Bearcat basketball team clicked on all cylinders, leading for the entire 40 minutes in their 72-32 victory over Washington & Jefferson College in the Henry Memorial Center in Washington, PA.
The win was the first for Saint Vincent in nine tries over W&J since joining the Presidents' Athletic Conference in 2006, and it improved the Lady Bearcats' record to 10-1 overall, and a perfect 4-0 in PAC play.
Maria Baroffio led three double-figure scorers for Saint Vincent with 17 points, while
Devin McGrath added 16 and
Brittany Sedlock 12. Sedlock also grabbed 15 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season, and the Lady Bearcats enjoyed a 54-41 advantage on the glass for the game.
The Lady Bearcats took control from the start, taking a 9-0 lead just three minutes into the first half. Four minutes later, a jumper from McGrath increased the SVC lead to 16-4, and the Lady Bearcat advantage would remain in double figures for the duration of the half. Saint Vincent enjoyed its largest lead of the opening frame, 28-14, with 3:34 left, before taking a 31-20 advantage into the locker room.
Saint Vincent began the second frame in much of the same fashion as the first, scoring the first seven points, capped off with a jumper from Sedlock at the 16:40 mark that would push SVC in front 40-20.
The Lady Bearcats stretched their run to 26-7 when a pair of free throws from
Caty Kumar made the score 56-27 with 11:15 left, before two more freebies from
Ariel Rocco would give SVC a 32-point lead, 59-27, with nine minutes left.
The cushion would continue to grow for Saint Vincent, as the Lady Bearcats' would end the game on a 12-0 run, finishing the night's scoring on a Kumar three with 30 ticks left that made the score 72-32.
While the Lady Bearcat offense was firing on all cylinders, the W&J offense was not, as the Presidents managed just 12 field goals on 56 attempts (21.4 percent), including an 0-for-19 mark from behind the three-point line. W&J also committed 24 turnovers, with the Lady Bearcats picking off 17 steals, led by five apiece from Sedlock and McGrath.
W&J was led by Courtney Walsh, who came off the bench to post a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Vanessa Rivera added eight points, while adding a team-high four assists.
Saint Vincent will return to action on Thursday night, returning home to face off against longtime rival Geneva College at 6pm in the Carey Center.
