Late surge lifts SVC to 12-point conference win

BOX SCORE

The Saint Vincent women's basketball team led by just two points, 55-53 just past the midway point of the second half, but a strong offensive surge helped the team pull away to a 76-64 victory.  With the win, the team improves to a perfect 5-0 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference.

Things looked good for the visiting Bearcats at the start, opening a 5-0 lead in the game's first three minutes.  However, the Bison turned things around in a hurry, scoring the game's next nine points, and continuing to battle Saint Vincent through much of the first half.

Bethany held a 20-16 lead at one point, but SVC then went on a 19-3 run to take a 35-23 lead, but the double-digit advantage would not hold.  After a Maria Baroffio score with 2:00 left made the score 37-27, the hosts scored the final four points of the half to make it a 6-point game, 37-31 at the halftime break.

The second half started much like the first, with Saint Vincent's Brittany Sedlock, Devin McGrath and Baroffio combining for nine quick points to run the lead to fifteen, 46-31, and it appeared as though SVC would cruise from that point.

The lead was still ten, 52-42, after a Jordan Clinton score with 13:45 left, but the Bison then scored the game's next 8 points, cutting the gap to just two, 55-53.

A pair of free throws by Sedlock ended the run, then Melissa Mansur hit a key three-pointer, followed by a traditional three-point play by Emily Fenton.  The 8-point Saint Vincent run returned the lead to ten, and was part of a 21-5 run that put the visitors ahead by 18 points.

Baroffio led all scorers in the game with 22 points, while Sedlock added 17.  Mansur (12) and Fenton (11) also scored in double figures.  Sedlock had a team high 7 rebounds, while Ariel Rocco added six.

With the win, Saint Vincent improves to 12-1 overall on the season.
