The Saint Vincent men's basketball team defeated Franciscan University of Steubenville on Monday night at the Carey Center, 82-25.
Saint Vincent looked strong on both sides of the ball in the first half after winning the opening tip. The Bearcats came up empty on their first possession, but then senior guard
Dennis Bassich passed inside to freshman
Ralph Nin for an easy layup. From there,
Tauvon Pettiford took over. He scored eight consecutive points including jumpers from opposite sides of the key. Additionally,
Dillon Stith was electrifying off the bench with 2 dunks.
Defensively,
Ryan Nelson was a strong presence inside for Saint Vincent. However, he was forced to return to the bench after committing three consecutive fouls.
The Bearcats never lost their first half lead, going to the locker room up, 47-16.
Saint Vincent continued their dominance in the second half, holding Franciscan to 9 points while scoring 35 of their own.
The Bearcats bench played extremely well with 9 points from
Nic Martin. He was 4-5 on the evening, 1-2 from three-point range. Again Stith energized the team with a dunk and 11 total points off of the bench.
Isaac Turner and
Sean Kett both added 7 points respectively. In total, the bench scored 46 of Saint Vincent's 82 points.
Overall, the Bearcats were 63.6 percent (35-55) from the field and 77.8 percent (7-9) from the line. Franciscan struggled going 25 percent (8-32) from the field. However, the were slightly better at the line shooting 58.3 percent (7-12).
Pettiford lead the night in scoring for the Bearcats with 12 points. Bassich contributed 10 points.
Defensively, Nin led the rebounding effort with 7.
Saint Vincent moves to 4-2 on the season and will travel to Westminster on Wednesday for its first conference game.
