Maria Baroffio celebrated her Senior Night in style, leading the 14th-ranked Bearcats with 17 points as they defeated Grove City 58-46 in Presidents' Athletic Conference women's basketball action in the Carey Center.
Baroffio was one of two double-figure scorers for the Bearcats, as teammate
Brittany Sedlock tallied her 11th double-double of the year with 14 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Saint Vincent limited the Wolverines to just 15 field goals for the game, including only seven in the second half, while the Bearcats forced 25 turnovers and gathered 10 steals.
The game was tight throughout a low-scoring first half, as the teams shared four ties and three lead changes in the first nine minutes of play. The Bearcats used an 8-2 run to jump out to its largest lead of the frame, 19-13, on a
Devin McGrath bucket with 6:25 left, but the Wolverines would outscore Saint Vincent 6-3 over the duration to send the game into the intermission with the score 22-19 in favor of the Bearcats.
Over the opening 20 minutes, the Bearcats shot just 29 percent (9-for-31) from the floor, including an 0-for-6 showing from long range. The Wolverine offense didn't fare much better, going 8-for-22 from the field and 1-for-7 from behind the arc.
The story was much different in the second half, as the Bearcats took the momentum from the start. Up 24-22 at the 18-minute mark, Saint Vincent struck with a 17-2 run over a five minute span, with eight points from Baroffio and six from Sedlock, to go in front 41-24 with just over 13 minutes left in regulation.
The Wolverines would score four straight to cut the deficit to 41-28, but the Bearcats charged right back, as six straight points from Baroffio gave the hosts their largest lead of the night, 49-30, with 7:18 remaining.
Grove City would mount a late comeback attempt, cutting the gap to 51-42 with just over three minutes left, but the second half deficit was too much for the Wolverines to overcome, as the Bearcats would out-score the visitors 7-3 down the stretch to earn their eighth straight victory.
Grove City (12-12 overall, 7-8 PAC) was led on the scoresheet by Christine Slater, the leading scorer in the PAC, who tallied a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Allison Wells added 11 points and Leah Gibson 10 for the Wolverines, while Megan Gebrosky dished a game-high five assists.
The victory improves Saint Vincent's record to 22-2 overall, and 14-1 in the PAC. The team will look to avenge its lone conference loss of the season this Saturday, as the Bearcats wrap up the regular season with a 1pm game at Thomas More College, ranked first nationally.
