BOX SCORE
The Saint Vincent men's lacrosse team stormed back from a 9-6 halftime deficit to defeat host Frostburg State 17-12 in the Bearcats' 2011 season opener.
Eight different Bearcats scored at least one goal, with five scoring at least two, led by five from
Will DeLanoy.
Zach Wilfong added three goals, and
Mike Diggs,
Jake Dick, and
Ryan Kearney two apiece for Saint Vincent, which out-shot the Bobcats 51-29 for the game.
Diggs got the scoring started quickly, putting the Bearcats in front 1-0 with an unassisted tally just 90 seconds into play. Frostburg answered with three unanswered goals over the next three minutes to go in front 3-1, but the Bearcats would score the three goals of the quarter - one apiece from Kearney, Dick, and Wilfong - to take a 4-3 lead after the opening 15 minutes.
Dick put the Bearcats in front 5-3 with a goal just over a minute into the second quarter, but the Bobcats would counter by scoring six unanswered goals in a nine-minute span to go in front 9-5. DeLanoy would end the first half scoring with a goal in the final minute, to send the game into the intermission with the Bearcats behind 9-6.
DeLanoy kept the hot hand to open up the third quarter, scoring three goals in the first four minutes to tie the game at 9-all.
Josh McCloskey's first goal of the season, scored with 8:34 left in the quarter, would allow the Bearcats to regain the lead at 10-9, and after Frostburg would tie it two minutes later, SVC would end the quarter by scoring four unanswered goals, including two from DeLanoy and one apiece from Kearney and Wilfong, to take a 14-10 lead into the fourth stanza.
Diggs and Will Selmayer would score in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter to make the score 16-10, and it was a deficit too large to overcome for the Bobcats as the Bearcats cruised down the stretch for the season-opening win.
In addition to his five goals, DeLanoy added two assists for a seven-point day.
Alex Walsh also added a pair of helpers, while
Sean Kretovics added a goal and an assist in his collegiate debut. Kearney, Wilfong, Dick, and
