Bearcats, Titans trade softball victories

Box Score- Game One

Box Score - Game Two

The Saint Vincent softball team rebounded from a 4-2 loss in the opener to take the nightcap 4-1 in a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader at Bearcat Field.

In the opener, the Bearcats were done in by a pair of Westminster long balls and saw a late comeback fall short, before Saint Vincent took an early lead in the nightcap and never looked back.

Game one saw Westminster get on the board in a hurry, with lead off hitter DiAndra DiBacco smacking a solo home run in the first inning.  The Titans added onto their lead in the second, when Olet Stasko drove home Lauren Stoczynski who led off with a double to make it 2-0.

The Bearcats had numerous chances to chip away at the deficit, but stranded the bases loaded in both the third and fourth innings.  Westminster scored two more runs in its half of the fifth, on a home run by Katie Hughes, before Saint Vincent looked to put together a late seventh inning rally.

Sam Shumaker and Leanna Seminsky led off the frame with back-to-back singles, before Maria Adams laced a single to left center, scoring Shumaker.  The Westminster left fielder misplayed it, also allowing Seminsky to score, and sending Adams to second.  However, the Titans' Lis Schulz quashed the rally, ending the game by inducing a pair of ground outs.

Saint Vincent managed nine hits in the opener, with two apiece from Seminsky, Shumaker, and Becky Deane.  The Bearcats stranded a total of 10 runners on base in the loss.

Shauna Hetrick started in the circle and took the loss, working five innings and allowing four runs on nine hits, with five strikeouts.  Emily Lauterbach came on in relief and threw a scoreless sixth, recording one strikeout.

Schulz earned the complete game win in the circle for the Titans, allowing two runs (one earned) with one strikeout.  The Titans had 10 hits in the opener, with Stasko, Hughes, and Carissa Conway each going 2-for-3.

In the nightcap, the Bearcats took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.  Seminsky led off with a single, and with two outs, was driven home on a Lindsey Daniels double down the right field line.  Saint Vincent would tack on another run in the second, with Shumaker leading off the frame with her second home run of the season, a towering shot to center, to make the score 2-0.

After Westminster's Erica Kimmick led off the third with a home run to center, cutting the SVC lead to 2-1, the Bearcats put the game away with a pair of insurance runs in the fifth.  Shumaker and Seminsky singled to lead off the inning, and were both plated on Deane's fourth hit of the day, a double off the fence in right center, to make the score 4-1 and close out the day's scoring.

The four runs were more than enough for SVC starting pitcher Alyssa Grossman, who faced just three batters over the minimum in the complete game win.  She scattered four hits and struck out four batters, without issuing a walk, and lowered her season ERA to 0.90 in improving to 7-3 on the year.

Six of the Bearcats' seven hits in the nightcap were recorded by three players, as the trio of Shumaker, Seminsky, and Deane all had two hits apiece.  Brittany Gamble was the lone player with multiple hits for the Titans, as she went 2-for-3.

After the split, the Bearcats' record moves to 12-8 overall, and 3-7 in PAC play.  Westminster ends the day with a 13-11 overall mark, and 6-2 conference record.

The Bearcats will now return to action on Monday, traveling to PAC foe Thiel for a 3:30 doubleheader.
